Experience with radar detectors?

Ready to race!
So I'm gonna be driving from northern California to Kentucky this summer for work. I will be alone, and will have plenty of time to do the trip in....but most of the states I'm gonna be driving through are completely flat and boring. I've been on my fair share of cross country roadtrips in my time, and have always wondered if I should get a radar detector. Not that I am trying to beat any world records or go flat out......but maybe at least crack triple digits here and there.

Ill be driving my GTI 6MT

I don't have any experience with radar detectors. What are you thoughts?

I use a Passport 9500ix in both my GTI and 996, as well as running Waze. The 9500ix has very good sensitivity and will pick up radar from a good distance, giving you time to react and slow down. Waze is awesome because many people use it and it uses live reports from other 'Wazers'. The Passport comes with a year of Escort Live, IIRC. Escort Live allows other owners of similar products report live data as well. I usually just depend on Waze for the live reports and the detector to pick up new threats that have not been reported yet.

Only issue with Waze and Escort Live is if you're the only driver for a long distance and nobody has previously reported anything.

Safe travels!

+1 for the 9500ix and Waze.

Although, I've been getting a lot of false positives lately on my 9500ix. At least, I think they're false positives. Read somewhere that newer vehicles blind spot monitoring systems can set off radar detectors nowadays. Don't know how much truth there is to that.

Prefer that problem to it not working or having nothing. Whenever I drive the wife's van, I feel like I'm driving naked.

Nice to get on the highway and follow someone who's tooling along at 80 or 90 and know that they're my guinea pig...unless we're caught from behind, obv. Key there is to move along at a higher rate of speed than most cruisers.

you guys so lucky, radar detectors are illegal in Canada, just gotta pray there is no cop when speeding. Best thing to do is find a group and dont be the last car, or the first lol

So with WAZE, do you mount your phone to the dash or something and watch it as youre driving?

Use a phone clip on the vent. Phone doubles as gps and waze. With blue tooth audio, it plays my music, announces directions, and calls out waze alerts for cops and such. Amazing app on highways.

I have a magnetic phone clip to the right of my stereo. I take a glance at it quickly before I have some fun. Always check your rear view mirror because neither Waze nor a detector is going to help if there just so happens to be a cop driving closely behind you. Learned my lesson the hard way years 12 years ago in my old WRX.

That sounds legit. I am going to download this. I drive a 50 min commute to work and its all pretty much highway, so I can see this as a benefit on a regular basis.

For sure! I have always considered myself a responsible speeder.....whatever that means. I'm always watching around me and have been pretty fortunate. Always keeping an eye on my rear view mirror. I actually got to do a ride along with the CHP and he told me he gets a lot of people by just creeping up on them. I also don't drive like a douche. A lot of guys tail gate and cut people off but I only really open it up when there isn't anyone around.

I got caught with a radar detector years ago, an experience I never want to duplicate again. If you get one don't install it "into" the car, when they confiscate it, any damage during the seisure is your problem.

I now use the Waze app, while not perfect it has save me quite a few times both in Canada and the US. One of the reasons I installed the Eonon Android Radio in the Golf, it's better to use Waze on the Eonon, than on my iPhone, that way cops can't get me for operation of an illegal device as it's my radio and a part of my vehicle.

Good Luck!

Man honestly I've had the valentine one for 2 years and it hasnt failed me. I came close to getting caught a few times but avoided the cops because my radar went off way ahead of time... I know there are some other models that are comparable but nothing yet that beats the sweet old Valentine!
