My brother has a P320 and that thing is pretty nice to shoot. Also the whole modularity thing is nice, being able to switch out frames and such.

Anyone have any experience with Canik pistols? I'm debating a TP9SF Elite Combat or a FN509 Tactical for my next one. I've heard the trigger is a bit better on the Canik, but I also like the mag sizes on the 509

Well, here's my P226 Legion:

Worth. Every. Penny.

I was worried about paying the premium, but the second I got my paws on it... That thing is amazing.

It probably should have come with a six pack of Mountain Dew and a bag of Doritos, but man alive is that one sweet pistol.

There's some more obscure stuff around here, but that's my most modern "the search is over" firearm.

Great gun! Can never go wrong with a SIG. The P226 is very accurate and probably one of the best pistols out there. Which chamber did you go with?

I like the suppressor height sights and the common thread size on the barrel, but in addition to being more expensive, i'd then have to spend more money on a trigger to get that on par with the Canik, and I think i'd rather have another 1500-2000 rounds of ammo than those out of the box.

I bought the 9mm for commonality and economy. I had a few cans of 9mm ball here, and I wasn't about to just use them as door stops.

What other purpose is an assault rifle supposed to serve besides the one of being an assault rifle?

An assault rifle has but one purpose, and for that the AK is... meh. People seem to think their sporting versions make good hunting rifles, target rifles, home defense weapons, ottomans, waffle makers, etc. Their design is purposefully sloppy, and lends poorly to the attempts to correct this for civil hands.

At least with the AR they make a pretty okay assault rifle, and lend themselves to modification from this purpose much better. The design is inherently much more accurate, and the modularity encourages the user to LEGO their way to what they want.

YMMV

Just because I hate how much the term has been misused, 99% of the people (probably more) in this country don't own assault rifles. I agree with everything you said there, just hate when people call semi-autos assault rifles, or worse assault weapons, just because of how they look.

Yeah. Was a bit of a troll ;)

I dislike AKs as well. They are a decent enough assault rifle, but for any other purpose they are mediocre at their very best.
@anotero beat me to it.. but yes, what he said. Lol

Have half dozen of them, most recently a pistol that’s about to get suppressed. Will post pics later, maybe now if I can find some on my phone. Moved away from the AR platform which requires as much cleaning as shooting, every 2-3 outings. Haven’t cleaned my AKs ever. AK > AR any time of the day except maybe long distance (300yds+) precision shooting but I wouldn’t pick an AR as my first choice there either. Lol

Some gun porn off my phone..

If we are talking about the original AK-47, then yes, it's very dated. The AK-74 was created for a reason. And even that variant with its 5.45 round has been around for 45 years. Now if one were to get an AK-103 or the new AK-12, that's a different story. Modern AK's are modular as much as the modern AR-15.

Those boys look noice!

Since we can't (almost) own true assault rifles in the US, I would go with the Winchester 1895 chambered in .30-06 for long range fire. Great for recreation, can take a beating, doesn't need to be cleaned incessantly, and is good enough for me in case of a zombie apocalypse.
Add to that a Saiga for area damage shooting, and I'm good to go.

What is this cleaning you all speak of?

I don’t touch my rifles till my groups start to open. One of my .22s (11lb Kimber 82G) has about 11k down the bore and it’s never seen a brush beyond the initial cleaning when I received it from the CMP.

I’ve never played with the new AKs, their introduction was past the time where they mattered to me. I agree the design is quite good for what they were built to do, I’ll never take that away. They are just one of the last things I’d grab when I want to engage any target, at any range... unless I’m looking to just mag-dump for giggles. Now I pay for my own ammo, so I don’t mag dump much anymore. They are easy minute of bad-guy out to mild combat ranges, but they quickly move to area targets only. Cost of ammo and my inability to remember my uncle sugar isn’t footing the bill when using them make it so my M4gery, grendel, and M14 sit in the locker 99% of the time... old habits die hard. I’ll drain a 20rd mag in the M14 in less than 30sec, and my smile is chased off when I think, “well, that was $16.”

....and that's why my bolt guns, mainly my single shot 22s and my current comp rifle, spit out thousands and thousands of rounds a year.

Post societal collapse, I’ll take my M14 or put my .260 back in the normal stock. I learned a long time ago it’s better to drop the guy with an AK at >500yrd, than it is to be in a firefight with him. For up close anything will do, as long as you are comfortable with it’s use.

Regarding modularity of the newer AK platforms, are they as LEGO as the AR? Meaning am I 10min and some simple hand tools from changing a barrel or other major components as with the AR. Are they a couple take-down pins as a magazine away from new calibers and/or intended purposes: SBR to long range precision and all in between? Not trying to get snippy, genuinely curious.

And for the record, I am pretty far from an AR fanboi, I own two because reasons.

You talk like you engage adversaries knocking on your door three times a day :) Remind me not to get a house where you live -- I don't have time to engage in firefights on a regular basis.

"simple hand tools, etc." -- ehm, why exactly do you buy guns? Not getting snippy, but I prefer to get a gun, fine tune it once or twice and not have to finagle with it by changing anything. You know, I don't want to be caught screwing with my guns via a multitool in case I have to engage a target :)
