"If you’ve been looking for a new 2020 Volkswagen Golf with a rear ejector seat then I have some good news for you. Euro NCAP crash tests have shown that the rear driver’s side door could pop open in an accident, which is definitely not something you want car doors to do."

Yes, its still early and yes I know these aren't available yet in the US...but still.

It's a feature so rear seat occupants can get out easier.

was just going to say this. Obviously it's german engineering at it's best, so that you can escape quickly

I was more fascinated with the fake pedestrian walking in front of the car. They should have added more realism by having him looking down at a cell phone.

if they can get the brake to come on automatically during the pedestrian/bike test I hope they also beep the horn.

“Door openings are rare nowadays and it is important that VW is committed to finding the root cause.”

How dumb is this so-called engineer? Obviously the root cause is getting hit from the side.

Mystery solved. You’re welcome. :rolleyes:

The outcome with the back doors seems obvious with such force collapsing the center pillar. The pillar is forced in to the point where the forward section of the rear door pivots inward and its latch has nothing to catch. Meh, safety testing is comprised of so many contrived variations these days that given enough experimentation on most any brand, an "OMG!" finding is almost assured. Note that the Golf still earns a Five Star rating.

Interesting on the Euro Ncap website on the ‘safety equipment’ tab for the mk8 Golf, it shows the mk8 doesn’t have a driver’s knee airbag, whereas the mk7 / mk7.5 Golf did, and even the mk6 Golf had one;

mk8 Golf; https://www.euroncap.com/en/results/vw/golf/39844
mk7 Golf; https://www.euroncap.com/en/results/vw/golf/10955
mk6 Golf; https://www.euroncap.com/en/results/vw/golf/11075

Deletion of an airbag does seem like cost cutting at the expense of safety.
Or perhaps that studies showed that knee airbags weren't necessary in the dash design. In crash testing, the engineers determine where Vince and Larry are going to go and decide if an airbag will help reduce injuries.
