MK7 Golf R is a rare breed in USA.

I’ve owned my 16’ Golf R for almost 3 months now and I’ve see two other MK7R in that time (one was passing through town on the 101 south, one is local).
I wonder out of the cars sold in the US; how many are still in the wild. I see GTi, WRX, Evo, M3, S3 everywhere in California, but we’re definitely a rare breed. MK7R drivers I’ll see you in the wind.

Seems like it's just your area. I see lots of them daily.

I've seen very few 7.5s (GTI or R), but lots of 7s. Which is actually weird, because the 7.5 models have officially been on sale longer than the 7s were (2015-17 vs. 2018-21 in North America).

Edit: This only applies to GTI, as the 7.5 R was only on sale 2018-19.

My two best friends both have R’s and I know a handful of other owners in my area.

I shared this previously.... regarding their rarity:

There is 11,340 MK7 Rs (~3,800 avg/yr) and 8,884 MK7.5 Rs.... (~3,000 avg/yr)

Total of 20,224 Golf R (Mk7/7.5) in the entire US.....

If you disregard Golfs, around 13% of MK7s were Golf R Mk7s and about 18% of MK7.5s are Rs (NOT COUNTING 2021 when the R was discontinued)

They are rare even here in Miami..... I usually see one every other month.....

edit: I did a stupid guesstimation that if the Miami metro area has around 2.5 million people, or 1/110 of the country's population... then there should be around ~180 Golf R's in my area....

I did a stupid guesstimation that if South FL has around 10 million people, or 1/33 of the country's population... then there should be around ~600 Golf R's in my metro area....

If you got those numbers out of the VW sales reports the model years and sales years don't align neatly. The overall numbers are correct, but year by year varies because you had 2016 model year cars start showing up in 2015 etc. The last production year for the R was 2019 so all the 2020 sales are actually 2019 model year vehicles. Don't remember if the 2018s showed up early in 2017 of if there was still 2017 inventory available in early 2018 but that would also skew the 7 vs 7.5 numbers a bit.

Yeah I used the VW yearly sales reports.. you are right, the totals are correct but the model years aren't exact.... it shouldn't be TOO far off though from what I remember
