I am looking into putting a trailer hitch on my 2016 tdi variant (sportswagon) SEL, I have a class 1 cheap hitch on one of my MK4 diesels that works great for me. I may just go with the cheapy because the trailer I tow is a trailer I bought and still tow with a motorcycle in 1978 (motorcycle pulls it ,not on it), total weight of 300lbs unloaded so works with basically all low cost hitches. I live in a beach area and could get a small boat of some sort and be able to launch it. So it may be worth putting on a little higher quality. I have gathered some info but am concerned about i have the sensors in my bumper and interference, i assume manufacturer should know. Anyone with a hitch want to chime in with what you have learned. Here is some I have found, check the first link as it has a european model that has the hitch built in with a really clever design. I also found a site for actually plugging the wiring in that has several benefits thet the car will activate from security to abs modifying actions.

Can’t really help, as I’ve never done a hitch. I have read along in a few threads, and this one came to mind:

https://www.golfmk7.com/forums/index.php?threads/hitch-for-gti.338748/

Not sure if you’ve read through any of those yet or not…
nope missed that one searched only "trailer hitch" in subject.

Thanks much for that link, I think with those chiming in saying they liked the low cost will go with a low cost one initially for the ease of installation. I added a youtube link to that OEM version only allowed/available in Europe models.

I have the cheapy curt for a bike rack. It's like 200 lbs tongue weight but 300 trailer I think.
Yeah it stinks there is a opening under the bumper where a European hitch would go.

ya that european OEM one as noted in the video is rated at depending on the incline from 1500 kg-1700 kg towing gross weight on a 1.5 liter gasser engine.

This hauling capaity is met with the aftermarket stealth one I linked above, that is the highest price with all bells and whistles from USD$600.00 to $800.00 with wiring and associated..

Anyone:

I've considered the t-one connector. However, they do not list one for the GTI in the 2017 MY; but there is one for the Golf. What is the difference between the GTI and Golf tail light circuits? Thanks!
if no-one chimes in order from amazon and if it does not work I think we have 30 days to return it.

Thanks for the bump...

No one chimed-in; plus, I couldn't remember where I asked this question. HAHA! I saw some reviews in Amazon from people who installed the unit on both "S" and Lighting Package cars with good results. I expect to have one on hand very soon, followed by days of rain. I should know my results within the next 10 days.
