8.5 GTE wheels

Anyone know why UK 8.5 GTEs only get 17” Richmond alloys whereas European GTEs have an 18” Catania option. Base UK price is already over the luxury car tax threshold?

The spec and options availability of a specific model will vary from country to country - I think VWUK determines the spec and options availability of cars sold in the UK. I daresay there’ll be other items of spec that are standard or extra cost options on a UK spec GTE that are not available in certain other overseas markets and vice-versa, so it’s a case of ‘swings and roundabouts’ when comparing UK spec with non-UK spec.

You may need to put your question to VWUK for a definitive answer, although the cynic in me would say don’t be surprised if you don’t get a response or if you do, you may be waiting some time as they’re not renowned for responding quickly - if at all - to queries such as this.

… I rather like my Richmond wheels.
Two big positives of the Richmond alloys for me would be;
  • the design makes them very easy to clean.
  • the painted / powder coated finish is very durable, and no issues with the almost inevitable white worm corrosion that many diamond cut alloys succumb to after 2-3 years; sometimes sooner. My current car has diamond cut alloys because that was the only option. However, given the choice between alloys with a painted / powder coat finish or a diamond cut finish, I’d go for the former every time.
Another positive in relation to the 17” Richmond alloys is the cost of replacement tyres compared to replacement tyres for the 18” Catania alloys; tyres for the Richmond’s will be cheaper.

In my country it has the same issue before some time, only 17" was available.
But if you go to a dealer in their system they had all the options for wheels!
