First two days with a new Golf facelift style150 etsi

My car was back at the dealers yesterday for its fourth service and second MOT and I had a mk8.5 Golf as courtesy car for the day. I didn’t find the ‘oversized’ infotainment screen intrusive, it didn’t obstruct my forward view and i found the slider panel for climate control and audio volume easy to use.

It was the first car I’d driven with lane assist and although it felt a little weird at times, I didn’t feel the need to switch it off. Having said that, if I owned a mk8.5 and used it daily, I probably would turn it off.

I think the car had the new speed limiter warning thingy; if I inadvertently found myself above the speed limit (e.g. if I’d not slowed sufficiently before entering a speed limit zone) there would be an audible ‘ping’ and the speed limit sign on the instrument display would flash. I didn’t test it out by deliberately driving in excess of the speed limit for a prolonged period to see it the audible / visual warnings became something more severe, such as preventing me from accelerating above the speed limit.

The car did throw up one wobbly during the day; the parking sensors went off and the park pilot image appeared on the infotainment while I was waiting at a red light. There were no other vehicles around and no obvious objects close by that might have set them off. I had to endure around 30 seconds of a continuous tone and then they thankfully switched themselves off.

I’ve never driven a mk8 Golf so can’t comment on how - or if - the mk8.5 represents an improvement over the pre-facelift car (I think the car I had was an entry level Life model), However, if I was looking for a C segment car for my next car, the Golf would probably be on the shortlist. For me though, I think it would need to be an GTI 🙂.

Other than the graphite grey textured and the gloss black, the only other colour I can see that VW offer is red! I don’t know if that’s simply a solid plain red panel or something more subtle though as I’ve not seen them, presumably they could be painted though if so desired. as long as they didn’t look like they were missing something, I’d probably remove them if it made them look better.

That the inserts are available could be good if in the future the original ones got scratched etc they could be replaced, repainted or just removed to give the wheels / car a "new" look
:)
I have searched VW UK website for those details in your reply - cannot find anything!

They are listed in the VW accessory drop down menu in the options tab when you spec the car on the VW website.

Hi, I picked up a new facelift 8.5 Golf style 150 etsi yesterday, (13 weeks from order), trading it in for my old 2020 MK 8 (same spec). The old Mk 8, after software disasters and a new steering wheel, had finally settled down in the last year or so without any issues, but I remained apprehensive at going through all that malarky again.

My first impressions of the new model are as follows:

  • MiB4 Infotainment unit and associated software 2460 is a lot better and faster
  • 360 degree camera parking system (my only extra) works well and flicker free
  • Engine has no cover and no dipstick (oil level status via infotainment screen)
  • Engine appears to have no starter and seems to use the 48V electric motor for cold and hot restarts as per the stop start system. Uncanny, it seems to start from cold like a switch
  • Overall build quality much the same as the former model, gloss black centre console
  • Seems a tad quieter but that is subjective and could be because it is new
  • Speed recognition and driver awareness can both be modified or switched off completely but revert back after ignition is turned off/on. However, it is only a one or two click procedure which I think can be done on the move. Not the nightmare I anticipated. If you have assist systems up via the dashboard you can switch them off via the steering wheel.
  • Travel Assist is quite different, via the steering wheel mode button (the old travel assist button) you select either speed limiter, ACC, or travel assist. Speed limiter is unchanged, ACC works as before but it seems with no annoying passive lane assist (not in centre of lane message). Switch to Travel assist mode and the ACC and adaptive lane assist are permanently on. If you want to go back to ACC only, just change the mode selection, no need to disengage the whole lot and vice-versa for restarting travel assist. This is all achievable whilst leaving lane assist turned on via the infotainment screen. I think this is much better.
  • The illuminated VW front badge is very bright, bling lovers will like it I guess
  • No bongs or error messages so far, although it will take some time before trust is restored
Hope I got all this correct, I have only had three drives but I know there are some out there who might be grateful for some real feedback
Ditto, 'cept mine is 150PS petrol manual on PCP, didn't order Match model as I don't trust the keyless entry. Only specced spare wheel & jack, if you've ever experienced a puncture literally in the middle of nowhere (no fone signal, nothing) you will understand, VW cost is £300, since seen on-line for £130, oh well. Returned prev Style Mk8 also on PCP, ordered in April, new car on-site late-ish August waited til now for '74 plate as the number has some significance to me. Not spent as much 'new car time' as I'd like but also 'Style' badges are deleted as seems 'hand gesture control', also bigger entertainment screen is cool you are kinda aware of it in corner of your eye, it's faster to repond. Dunno actual mileage covered yet, 75ish ?, as I can't seem to add odometer to the display, 72-page hand book (rattling around in same 3-book large wallet) & built-in help functions not very helpful. But so far, so good, pic not taken at my home addy BTW, had just visited sister....

Thanks Carlosfandang0,

Unless I missed something, the inserts only appear to be available when speccing the car, couldn't find them as a stand-alone accessory and as is often the case there's a lot less choice on the options list on the VW Ireland website.
I think eventually if required, it would be remove the inserts or get them painted - in reality probably neither!

How do I display the mileage adomoter on the actove cockpit / digital cockpit / dials area / instrument cluster please everyone seems to call it something different? Been thro all the menus (turning cruise control on and off doesn't work despite Youtube tips), can't even find where to add / delete icons in the instrument cluster. Mileage displays at a so far paltry 87miles when car is switched off so it's obv recording miles covered, I'd just like to see it. On 6th Golf BTW: Mk5, 2 x 7's, 1 x 7.5, just traded in 2021 Mk8 so I should be able to do this kind of thing in my sleep, one might think. Any help appreciated....

Thanks already tried that didn't work, but read that method several times so will try again, report what transpires. S'ok, taking the car to dealer next week anyhoo (what, already ?!), oil level is down a tad & they already said I could bring it in for top ups, I find Golfs use up to 1/2 litre of oil over say 5k miles when running in, then almost none. Don't want to buy a bottle of oil and I pass 'dealership area' regularly anyway. Still 'the upside' (there's an upside ?), means whilst better half, so she tells me, wastes, er I mean spends time in the supermarket I can remain in the car 'playing with the new toy', settings;)...

Having checked through a few video reviews of the 8.5, I cannot see any that show the accumulated mileage on the dash/dials screen.

Nope still don't work, already emailed dealer & VW for info / advice. Maybe the car don't wish me to know how far it's travelled, it can't go far tho, I'm the only insured driver & keep both keys on me at all times, and it's locked up overnite in a garage....

Presumably it displays the total mileage when you turn the car off? And also when you unlock the car and open the door?

It does in right side window, but not while car is running. Was sat in supermarket car park, a woman approached as I got out, asked what I'd been doing & reckomed her friend had managed just by 'random button mashing' on the menu buttons. Worth a try I guess....

The problem with ‘random button mashing’ is when you eventually find the correct ‘button’ you forget which one you ‘mashed’. Come back Mini 1275GT all is forgiven.

I've had look at the cluster display for Total Distance:
Unlocking the car doesn't display it, turning off the engine prior to locking does.
In the cluster, the distance left to refueling appears to have replaced the permanent display of Total Distance
It can be displayed as shown in the photo below - I have it displayed in the three places it can be.
MK8 display shown also
