Yeh my Mk8.5 display looks mostly like the upper pic after pressing VIEW button on steering wheel, but total mileage won't display anywhere at all, only when I shut car down. Not over-fussed by such things, TBH if dealer can't sort it, won't bother about it car is on PCP, pretty much: "if at first you don't succeed try, try try again, then prob best to leave as it some things just aren't worth wasting your life over". Just checked car again, it don't appear in the long-term '0-0 472km' area....

Tried yet again, took a 13mile round trip last nite, 8th, when shutting car down display in RHS window of dash said (figures to the effect) 'trip 13m., total miles 21' - er, what (!?) but yeh defo 13 & 21, total was 90-odd last I drove it. Hmmm. Funny, I always thought only dodgy sellers & dealers 'turned the clock back', tho supposedly impossible with digital read outs / displays. But seriously, I have more important stuff to think about right now & so my interest on this is dropping like a stone, car booked in on Wednesday for oil top-up will have chat with dealer then. Thanks for info but TBH I'm not sure I'll be keeping it anyway it's on PCP so not that difficult to cancel / swap / whatever, done it before, nothing wrong with the car other than mileage display issues, but overall it just isn't really 'happening' for me, dunno, the 'new car experience' just doesn't seem to be there, I just feel 'huh ?' about it....

Ready to race!
Three weeks today from pick up, I have done a fair bit of town, B road, and motorway driving and it has been solid with no unexpected bongs or error messages. It occasionally reads the wrong speed sign and gets confused with some poorly signed areas (New Forest), but less so than the old MK8. It seems a better car than the old MK8 in lots of small ways that all add up. It has updated itself about four times so far and unlike the old car it performs them on the move without the "pausing while the car is being driven warning" message like before, it does it very quickly as well. A huge improvement for me is the travel assist, which aligns itself much better in the lane centre than my old car did, which used to place itself slightly to the right and was sometimes defeated by long sweeping motorway curves. The new system/software seems to read and react to the road and its markings more accurately. The hybrid system performs faultlessly but I had no problem with that in the old car anyway.

All good so far, I hope I haven't jinxed myself by writing this...

Hi, bit of a boring question but does anyone with the new model know if the 'Advanced driver attention & drowsiness monitor' is camera based (i.e. actually monitoring the eyes of the driver?).

I think it might be situated in the rear view mirror so I guess a way to test would be to cover over the mirror somehow (safely) and see if a warning came up

If Advanced Driver and Dowsiness monitor is VW’s current name for the Driver Fatigue Detection (DFD) system that I‘ve had in my past three VW’s then I think the DFD system monitors steering and pedal use, so unlikely DFD will be using a camera or sensor in the rear view mirror as it wouldn’t be able to see foot pedal inputs. I think DFD probably has an algorithm that uses the monitored steering and pedal inputs and if these fall outside of ‘acceptable’ limits, then the system will trigger an alert.

Maybe the Advanced Driver and Drowsiness monitor works in the same way?

Thanks for the response, I suppose the name change could coincide with the switch to camera based using eye tracking but possibly just renamed to sound better!

I'm invested in one of the companies involved but so much stuff is hidden by NDAs it's sometimes difficult to work out which models the tech is in. I really hope it's in the Golf, Polo and Tiguan because they all sell so well.

I might have to go to the dealer but didn't want to look weird putting a cloth over the RVM to see if the car pinged!

Update to my own post: dealer topped up the oil, grade is Shell Helix Ultra 0W-20, had car switched on & the oil level rose on the oil level monitor as it was being added, prob 'well duh !' moment but I liked it. Looked around once more & the new Golf is still the best car available so I will will be sticking with it, still a very good car afterall. Whle I do like cars, esp Golfs, I'm not an enthusiast who details & cleans cars every week not that I judge; it's pretty much safe, comfortable & reliable transport to me, but I do like it.

Re: the 'drowsiness monitor' had it 'ping' on me once in prev car, Golf 'better half' (so she tells me !) & self were on a long road trip, 400ish miles to go neither of us needed a toilet stop, I still felt genunely fresh & alert so we carried on. Think it 'pinged' a couple times maybe to alert / remind me I'd been driving a few hours, then it shut up as realised we weren't going to stop & we carried on our journey without issue.

Should mention day before oil top up I mentioned to bettter half 'getting the oil topped up' & the IDA system cut in, said something about oil then shut down again. I said "It's ok IDA the oil is getting sorted" but 'she' didn't reply....

I don't think it is camera based but it certainly seems to work. I left very early in the morning for a long journey once and set traffic assist on and it was driving itself on the motorway, I felt tired but not so tired I was going to drop off. It warned me once or twice about having a break, then squealed at me quite loudly about not being alert which did make me take notice. It's never done it since, but then I've not had any real early morning drives again.

On the dashboard you can see two circles left and right that must contain some sort of sensor, possibly detecting head movements maybe?

If Advanced Driver and Dowsiness monitor is VW’s current name for the Driver Fatigue Detection (DFD) system that I‘ve had in my past three VW’s then I think the DFD system monitors steering and pedal use, so unlikely DFD will be using a camera or sensor in the rear view mirror as it wouldn’t be able to see foot pedal inputs. In my case it warned me about being drowsy when I was using traffic assist, so I wasn't steering or using any pedals. I'm pretty sure there are some sensors in the dashboard that are recording head movements or general body movements. I came back the same route in the evening that day, I wasn't feeling tired, still used traffic assist, and had no warnings then.

I've had my Style Mark 8.5 now since July, no problems at all particularly, a few things have happened or I've noticed:

1) I've set the parking brake to not automatically engage on engine off, it seemed to work initally, but possibly after some update (its had about three OTA) it ignores that I've said don't auto engage it and always does anyway.
2) The comfort window opening. I've set it to open all windows on holding down the unlock on the key fob, this doesn't always work and no windows open at all.
3) Travel assist, on one journey on UK motorway, it decided to slow me down on the motorway with a warning that a roundabout was ahead, it didn't brake harshly but it was "off the gas". It had decided I was leaving the motorway and so had taken the slip road off, which there was a roundabout, in reality I was carrying on underneath. Navigation was set and that was showing I was going underneath on the map, it hadn't deviated at all. It did this three times at other junctions. If this happens to anyone the quick trick is to press "RES" on the steering wheel and it immediately cancels the slow down and speeds back up, also pressing the accelerator does the same. On the same stretch of motorway in the opposite direction passing the same junctions it didn't do this at all.
4) I've lost connection to the VW servers on one occasion, so the 'Globe' is grayed out and voice control, traffic updates and the app on the phone all stop working. The eSIM was still on the Internet as Internet Radio was working perfectly so it wasn't a data/network connection issue. This resolved itself 24 hours later and just started working, so if anyone gets the same, rather than start resetting things, give it a day or two as it seems VW servers aren't the most reliable.

Other than those few minor niggles, I'm loving the car as a first time Golf owner.

Ditto, 'cept mine is 150PS petrol manual on PCP, didn't order Match model as I don't trust the keyless entry. Only specced spare wheel & jack, if you've ever experienced a puncture literally in the middle of nowhere (no fone signal, nothing) you will understand, VW cost is £300, since seen on-line for £130, oh well. Returned prev Style Mk8 also on PCP, ordered in April, new car on-site late-ish August waited til now for '74 plate as the number has some significance to me. Not spent as much 'new car time' as I'd like but also 'Style' badges are deleted as seems 'hand gesture control', also bigger entertainment screen is cool you are kinda aware of it in corner of your eye, it's faster to repond. Dunno actual mileage covered yet, 75ish ?, as I can't seem to add odometer to the display, 72-page hand book (rattling around in same 3-book large wallet) & built-in help functions not very helpful. But so far, so good, pic not taken at my home addy BTW, had just visited sister....

I went for the Style for similar reasons, added rear tinted windows, 360 degree camera and in moonstone grey. I like it that the Style comes with some leatherette on the seats, seems not many trim levels do, in fact I think only the Style in the new Golf comes with it, all the other trims including Rs and GTIs don't unless you go for full on leather as an option. So head rests, arm rests front and rear and the back of the front seats and most of the back seat are leatherette rather than fabric. Looks smarter but much more practical, for example head rests can get a bit greasy or dirty so its just a wipe if they are in a leatherette, or if the back of the seats get dirty from little feet again they can be wiped.

Same here, no manual, just a small pamphlet.

I love reading vehicle manuals when I buy a new car so I am very saddened to hear that VW has decided to replace it with a pamphlet 😢.

Sorry if posted, noticed only last week the mirror 'downward flood LEDS' (forget what they are called), project a VW logo onto the ground....

Keep an eye on them as based on discussions over on the Golf R forum (Golf R mirror LED’s project an ‘R’ onto the ground), they’re prone to fail. Dealers do replace them under warranty though.
