Golf 8 - Wireless Charging behaviour

Massimo 2323

So Pin 2 and 3 in the Golf 8 go to the Kessy control unit while in the 8.5 they go to the Gateway. I know that the wireless charger in the Golf 8.5 is seen as a control unit in the Gateway "DE-Wireless Charger Front" and there are some codings and adaptations available.
Also there is a setting in the infotainment to enable/disable the wireless charging.

Thank you for this. I’m not giving up. I’ve found a cheap oem charger from a mk8.5 (with socket for brown plug) so will keep you informed. I know others have posted about just get a usb cable but there is something about trying to keep the car with everything working despite it making little financial sense

I'm curious, since Massimo didn't get that one to work. Can you tell the partnumbers of the one's youbnow do have, and the one you will receive?

I use the cable method. It's not that the charging pad doesn't work, it does, it's more that the fully working charging pad isn't up to the job of supplying the realtime requirements.

If I'm just charging the phone the charging pad works well.
If I'm charging the phone as well as using the phone - for Android Auto, and Google Maps to play music and GPS a journey - the charging pad doesn't supply enough charge to maintain and top up the charge loss over the course of a journey.

With a cable the phone has a higher charge at the end of the journey, often 100% charge. With the fully working charge pad the phone's charge will eventually run out.

Here are some photos of the 8.5 15w charger and brown plug showing part numbers - wires are different colours to a mk8 brown plug.

And here are photos of my mk8 charger that no longer charges modern iPhones.
So the two purple sockets (which aren’t connected to anything) and the brown plug seem to dictate that you can’t get an Aliexpress charger to work. The challenge now is whether coding can help the 8.5 charger work in my mk8 as it hasn’t burst into life sadly☹️

Bit of a happy ending -I fitted the Chinese 30w charger and tapped into the power for the usb ports directly above the charging pad as by chance the charger came with a wiring loom. It works. No height issues either. I had to lengthen two of the cables that’s all. I can to the conclusion that as I use car play a lot the visible reminder that the phone is being charged is there on the screen anyway.
Thank you all for your help on this thread. Much appreciated.
