No coding needed, plug and play.

charger

Be advised, increase thickness of cover on top of charger, otherwise it will not work properly!
Thanks dude! I ordered from the link you sent me! And I have this as the mat, replaced my old one which had no air vents

Goodmorning Mac,

No, he has an Golf MK8, and the charger for that model is the same as in MK7. This particular charger does not have a fan for airflow, so the rubber mat for both cars don't have air venting holes. We found out that the distance between the Chinese charger (wich is under the rubber mat obviously) and the phone has to be increased to work properly. And because the Chinese charger does have a fan, for MK7, the rubber mat needs to be modified to be thicker and have venting holes of some sort. Therefore we used a peace of cardboard under the mat to make it twice as thick as original. For MK8, Massimo tried the mat from MK8.5, because it is thicker and has already air venting holes, and it fits plug and play.

Yes, test a little more.

You can test without the case to decrease the distance between your phone and the charger, but I advise you, if you don't have any success, put the case back on, and put a piece of cardboard (1mm thick) under your phone. That helps for Chinese charger. Although it is unlikely that it helps for original charger.

Good luck with it, and let us know your findings.

Chris.
Hi guys,

So, after lots of messing about and testing I think the issue I’m having is down to me using MagSafe cases.

If I take either of my cases off the phone the charger seems to behave itself fine. With either case on the phone it will almost always throw up the message about failure to charge.

My wife has an iPhone 14 and a non MagSafe case and I’ve not seen her phone suffer the same error when charging.

So, I reckon it’s the MagSafe cases that are the culprits, perhaps the metal ring within them. But, I can’t do without the cases as I’ve several MagSafe chargers I use when travelling.

I may have to resort to using a cable when in the car although this will be really disappointing after paying so much for a car that can’t get basics right 🤦🏼‍♂️

Also, I tried the piece of cardboard, cut from an Amazon package, but that didn’t help.

I don’t think there is much use going to the dealer as they’ll say once it’s working without my case then the failure is the case…

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏼

I having the same interment wireless charging issues with my pixel 7 in a non magsafe case, in my Golf 8.5. I found that removing the car's wireless charging rubber mat seems to make charging a lot more reliable.

Interesting, have you tried without any case in your phone?

I presumed it was my cases as it worked without them and the wife’s appears to work fine with her case on that isn’t MagSafe…

My experience with wireless charging anywhere (not just in the VW) is that it is much slower and less effective than charging with a cable. So, I bought a charging cable that fits the phone and the VW, and keep in in the glove compartment in case I need to charge the phone in the car.

This ^^. Girlf tried the wirless charge on current & prev Golf a few times, phone indicated it was being charged didn't seem to be very much but did get a tad warm, we both use charge cables, work ok no probs.....

Well, I suppose that might result in some improvement, but it costs USD $292. A good quality USB charging cable costs about USD $20.

It's sort of a 'features vs. benefits' issue. Sure, wireless charging is a feature, but does it deliver USD $272 (plus labour time) of benefits?
$199 US I’m not spending that, but offers a solution to others 👍

In my Golf 8.5 Wireless charging isn't very reliable, my phone doesn't work, just comes up with an error that it can't charge. I have a case on it, but the phone works fine on other charging mats where I can position it correctly.

I think many of the issues are related to positioning, with larger devices there isn't enough room to move it from side to side to find the sweat spot, also my phone slides down to rest against the back of the charging area, however this is then off centre 'front to back' to the coils matching up! It really needs a larger area that is flat with a nice grippy mat to give plenty of room to position it correctly where it then doesn't slide about.

Seems more trouble than its worth having wireless charging in a car.
