Golf 8 - Wireless Charging behaviour

$199 US I’m not spending that, but offers a solution to others 👍

That looks identical to the Chinese wireless charger 5CG980611A.

I added a cutout cardboard so the iPhone was level and a little higher and now I don't get any more charging error notification.

I bought a 2021 eTSI back in April. The charging mat has been doing the whole 'ApplePay/Please remove items' routine since day one. After trying (and failing) to get any traction with Apple or VW I took it to one of the branches of the dealership I bought it from. They ran a diagnostic and told me that it worked fine, but the model of charging mat requires that the phone is case-free. They said they had tried to charge a phone and it worked fine. I went to pick up the car, tried my phone (caseless) just in case - and lo, it still wasn't working. Same for the service manager's iPhone. But the technician's did work fine.

So I took the car back to the actual dealership I bought it from. They ran diagnostics, same result. 'Your charger works fine, we tested it on at least two technicians' iPhones'. I went to collect, tried my phone (an iPhone 15 with payment cards loaded into ApplePay), same problem. Again, the service manager's phone didn't work either.

Now they are replacing the charging mat with a new unit. I'll share Massimo's super-helpful posts with them and hope that the new unit is glitch-free. They say it must be an intermittent fault as the diagnostics can't find any problem. I assume that the technicians' phone simply don't have any payment cards loaded into ApplePay while the service managers' phones do, and that's the simple explanation.

okay so I have finally received and installed the charging plate from Aliexpress. Big shoutout to @Massimo 2323 and @Meesters for providing all that helpful info!

Anywho, it’s actually working properly but the infotainment system would show the charging pop-up notification like twice every 30 seconds within two minutes, and it would sometimes tell me that the phone ain’t charging and the Qi logo shows up red, exactly how @Massimo 2323 described his case. I also use an iPhone 13 Pro Max in a Casetify MagSafe Case, which I think isn’t a problem at all. I think I just need to do a bit of tinkering with a piece of cardboard lol

On that note, @Massimo 2323 / @Meesters can y’all please show a pic of how the cardboard cutout y’all made looks like haha because I might do the exact same!

@huey, I have actually a Golf 7.5.

From here you see some designs for the MK7. My designs is basically still the same as in this post, but meanwhile I'm at version 3, with a brand new rubber inlay, and I didn't use cardboard any more but also a 2mm thick flexible piece of rubber mat instead, and glued it all together. So that it is more airtight and and the airflow wil be maximum true the venting area. Looks almost as factory installed for my opinion.

From page 15 you might find more information about the process.

Happy new year btw.

Collected my car from the dealership yesterday. They have stripped out the charging mat and put a completely new one in. No change whatsoever - my iPhone still won't charge (same problem - ApplePay opens).

There are 3 different wireless pads installed on the Golf 8 dipending on what extras are installed:

This wireless charging pad is installed from factory as standard:
Part Number: 5NA980611A
- 2F0- Without locking and starting systems
- 9ZV - Comfort telephony without external antenna connection

If you added the optional extra "Mobile phone Interface ‘Comfort’ with Inductive Smartphone Charging."
then this wireless charging pad is installed:
Part Number: 5NA980611
- 2F0- Without locking and starting systems
- 9IJ - Comfort telephony with LTE and wireless charging

If you have the optional extra "Mobile Key" then this wireless charging pad is installed:
Part Number: 3G0980611
- 2F1- With locking and starting systems
- 9IJ - Comfort telephony with LTE and wireless charging

In regards to the Wireless charging pad for the new Golf 8.5 the part number is:
3P0035502A
- GP1 - Vehicles with special upgrade measures
- 9ZQ - Comfort telephony with wireless charging (fast charge) without external antenna connection

According to the schematics and photos the connector uses a 6 pin brown plug (T6v) while on the Golf 8 it uses a 6 pin Black Plug (T6a). There are differences with the cabling too.

Hello Massimo - did your extensive research on these chargers extend to the wiring differences between the 6 pin brown plug (T6v) and 6 pin Black Plug (T6a).
My 21 plate has a brown plug and the chinese charger looks like it wants to accept the black one. Cheers

Hello,

Sorry to interfere. Does your charger already have ventilation holes, or is the rubber mat completely closed?

Hi Meesters the old one didn't have vent holes as it was 2021 spec. The new chinese one has a fan so it is equipped for cooling but my wiring is brown plug and I need to shave it a bit to get it to fit

Ok, lets wait what @Massimo 2323 has to say, this has my curiosity based on the schematics below.

Thanks for this, Massimo. As reported in my previous posts, I have had a 2021 eTSI Golf Mk8, right-hand drive UK model since April 2024, and the charging mat has never worked for any iPhone which has payment cards loaded into Apple Pay.

The work that was done last month by the dealership I bought it from is described as 'W3GO980611 014559/antenna', so it sounds like they fitted one compatible with the optional Mobile Key. I don't know if my car has this option and I definitely haven't set it up. I can't say whether the previous owner may have done. Would this affect whether the charging mat would work in my car do you think?

For reference here is a photo of the brown plug. 6 ports with no6 vacant. What I could do with knowing is which wire goes where to make this brown plug into the black one which seems to have been plug and play for other users. I have trimmed off the protusion on the plug and adjusted the socket - it connects to the Aliexpress charger but doesnt work currently

The pins are wired differently between the black plug and the brown plug.
That's because you have the wireless pad with the mobile key and the cables at pin 2 and 3 go to the CAN-L/CAN-H.
While the black plug Pin 2 and Pin 3 are KL30a and SIG so it won't work.
The Pin 1, 4 and 5 are identical. I think it does not work because it needs signal from the infotainment control unit at pin 3 AND KL30a too.

thank you for confirming - I think I will see if anyone who has a black plug/no mobile key would like my aliexpress charger!
