If ‘Hey Volkswagen‘ is now a £200 option it confirms that VW have lowered the standard specification of their Golf models.

Auto parking, aka Park Assist, is only a factory fit option, it requires an extra 4 parking sensors, 2 front and 2 rear, that are positioned near the wheel arches of the front and back wheels. It gives the car an all round view of obstacles.

Yes, and that’s how you can easily identify whether or not a car has the Park Assist option.

Huh, in the UK that "Hey Volkswagen" isn't standard. It's a what, £200 optional extra that you can also retroactively purchase in the in car store. Auto parking is the same (although i don't know if one can buy it retroactively). That said, i think the native voice control comes as standard if you go for the Discover Pro navigation (£1200 or something like that).

If it is possible to retrofit Park Assist, it’d be expensive as it’d require the removal and replacement of bumper covers - or modification of the existing bumper covers, additional wiring for new sensors and associated painting of new sensors (and painting new bumper covers if these are required) in addition to software coding. Retro fitting company Hazzy Dayz charge £1,795 to supply and fit Park Assist to an Audi Q3, so I’d anticipate a similar charge for a mk8 Golf if done by a specialist retro-fit company, and probably significantly more if done by a VW dealer. Retro-fitting by a non-VW specialist company would also have warranty implications.

For anyone considering getting this option (or who has ordered it and is waiting for their car to be built) a word of caution; when parallel parking a car with Park Assist, it uses the vehicles in front and behind the intended parking space as reference points in determining where to position the car when parked. So if those vehicles have parked badly (e.g. nearside wheels ‘brushing‘ the kerb stone or wheels mounting the pavement), Park Assist will attempt to badly park your car in a similar manner - i.e. up against the kerb or with the nearside wheels mounted on the pavement; result - scuffed alloys and / or potential tyre damage. So always be ready to intervene to prevent damage!

From what I‘ve read on other forums over the years, it’s one of those options that many owners use once or twice for the ‘novelty factor’ and then don’t use again.

Exactly how it went with our current autoparking. Used it twice earnestly, and then a few times to show off to a buddy. It was more about the fact that i've not had a car yet that actually has an "in car shop", i'm just curious as to what they sell there. I know of the natural voice control, i've read a bit about a dynamic ambient lighting option (or similar), .. just wondering what else is there.

edit: i do wonder though, if there's more parking sensors, does that mean that, if you park normally, the sensors are more accurate/have a wider "field of view"?

They certainly have a wider "field of view"

You may have experienced this situation...

I remember if I sat in a static traffic queue and there was a grass /concrete bank close on the side, the sensors would pick it up, & sound the continuous audio warning until the queue moved on.

My previous VW’s parking sensors used to give the audible warning in stop-go traffic queue scenarios even if I wasn’t close enough to other vehicles or objects to set them off - I didn’t have Park Assist.

It didn’t do it every time; I think it only did it if my car’s parking sensors picked up the high frequency signals from the parking sensors of the vehicle in front. It didn’t do it if the vehicle in front wasn’t fitted with parking sensors.

Indeed, that's what our car currently does.

Interesting.

Since my software update a few weeks ago I'm pleased to say that I've had no errors and the infotainment system is much more responsive.

However, could the update have messed with automatic gear changing settings? I used to be able to brake smoothly to a halt. Now the car lurches forward - I think when the engine changes down a gear. At least the revs seem to jump up when it lurches. I was wondering whether the updated software uses more engine braking to recover more energy?

Hi, I have this same problem with braking after update.
My car is going for inspection on August.

Seeing all the different threads thought I would share my experiences around the Golf Mark 8 upgrades.

Took my car (GTE) in for its upgrade to Martins of Farnham exactly 4 weeks ago. Was told they needed it for 3 days which seemed reasonable. 4 Weeks on still haven't got the car back and no idea when I will get it back.

Anyone else having similar experiences and what was done about it? Any help I would be grateful for as the garage don't seem remotely bothered.

Mine took 3 weeks due to the update process creating a fault so they couldn't delete or complete the update until they had a fix from VW. I was given a rental car for 2 weeks, they didn't have any available for the 1st week . I had regular status updates from the dealers who were very apologetic through out.

Mines been in a week so far, first service with updates. Not holding my breath that I'm going to see it anytime soon. I'm getting regular updates but they are in contact with VW.

First ever post. I'm UK based and took my Golf 8 2020 Style in to investigate an airbag warning light recently. While it was there the dealers decided to do a 91CU software update. It failed to update and has been in the garage ever since, coming up to 2 weeks. They told me that they'd tried to update 6 cars of which 2 including mine broke. Apparently the issue was escalated to ODIS(?) and then escalated further to the factory. I've been told there may not be any movements "for weeks". If you have a golf 8 that has been recommended for a 91CU update I'd recommend holding off until VW actually appear to test their software properly otherwise it's likely you'll be playing vehicular russian roulette.
you are not alone my car is also now in dealers second major update it has had the last one was about 12 months ago which solved some problems spurious travel assist warnings it took almost a week to do
i have been told that it will be in until next Tuesday that’s another 7 days

I'm approaching my three week anniversary of my local dealers trying and failing to do software update 91CU. They told me it had been reported to the factory nearly two weeks ago but since then they've heard nothing. I've noticed lots of people mentioning similar experiences and wonder if anyone has tried to work out what if anything the problem cars all have in common. My car is a 2020 1.5 TSi 150bhp style and it has previously needed to have it's steering wheel replaced once. Has anyone else who can't get their 91CU software installed got very different specs to this?
Sounds exactly like my car stuck in Vw service dept at least until Tuesday (6 days)
