Infotainment Hardware and Software Updates

The 91CU ha 11 criterions and it depends on the VIN which are applicable.
I know of those that had only criterion 10 done:
ABA activation correction (criterion 10)
On the affected vehicles a faulty function activation for the turning assistant with/without swerve support is corrected.

So it means no 1896 software update or no other control unit updates.
It seems to do with the Gateway ending with B.
For these I think another recall will be made where they will update or swap the gateway control unit and then apply all the software updates.

Mageor is your gateway part number ending with B?

I have 5 small updates for a week now... many times digital manual update.
Yes I have gotten also a lot of small OTA updates before going to the dealer this Monday for the 1896 update. Then once I left the dealer I got the notification for the Digital manual update only (don't have a picture). Now the notification does not read: "Digital manual updating, do not turn off ignition" but rather that it is not able to connect to it. Check the picture attached.

That's weird... Have you touch e-sim function? Try deactivate it and turn it back on.
White globe shows that there is internet connection.

What happens when you touch the error message? It disappears?
Go to system settings and system info, and you will find update button...

Yes that is my case I have the gateway part number ending with B.... Can I demand or provoke the B part replacement? A letter to the customer support or something? Thanks again for the reply Massimo.

I have not touched anything yet. The notification presented itself after leaving the dealer after update do 1896. I have Internet connection the whole time (white globe).
I will give it a few more days, maybe it will resolve itself, then I will try deactivating the e-sim. I was just wondering if any other member had this strange notification. Tnx for your input!

I think that you have to activate this update manually from settings

This morning I was once again greeted by the Digital manual error. After clicking the notification and dismissing it, I got another notification to change privacy settings. The car decided to change to Guest user, a known fault but I have never gotten it till now. After setting the primary user I was then greeted to login to We Connect... All in all everything is set now again and the Digital manual error had cleared (successfully updated). Strange that I never got the Primary user issues until now on the latest software 1896!!

Hello,

First of all, I apologize for my English.

I live in Turkey. I have a 2021 model 1.0 life
My hardware version 5h0035867A.

Sortware version 1325.

When I call the service in Turkey, they don't even know about the 1766 update. But my friend, who has the same hardware version as me, got the 1766 update from the service (he lives in another city). I don't know what to do :( I wish we could update online like you.

They will only update if you have problems mentioned in the TPI technical document regarding the 1766 software update.
Problems like:
Infotainment system that sometimes resets itself, freezes after a reset to the factory settings or cannot be reset to default setting.
Bluetooth connections sometimes is not possible.
CarPlay sometimes does not work or displays a black screen.
An online connection cannot be established with the infotainment system.
The TPI is 2065225/x (x represents the latest revision number starting with 1).

Greetings!

My 09.2020 Golf Style 1.5 eTSI was updated from 1688 to 1896 at the service. When I got the car back it was factory resetted and I had to re-enter my We Connect login details and it worked. Then it prompted me to become the primary user. I clicked on, prepared my 2 keys but all I get is "Please Wait" with a spinning wheel and nothing happens no matter how long I wait. I tried this multiple times but no luck.
Then I decided to do a factory reset but to my surprise my username was still there. Upon starting the car it it should say "Greetings, My Name" but it was only "Greetings," with no name. Then with the + sign I added again my login details and it signs in but becoming primary user still doesn't function.
Also the Shop icon on the homescreen went missing. Garbage software for two years now. :(

Is there anything I could do? Now I don't have any data about my car in the We Connect portal nor in the App and I paid for 3 years with Discover Pro.

I read it here somewhere that you can perform a factory reset with the 2 keys. Does that help?

Appreciate any help, thank you!

I have got exactly the same problem (post #543). Today in the morning I went to the service for 2nd try but they told me, if it doesn't help they will have to switch the whole infotainment unit for the new one (for free of course)...

Yes, I remember VW talking about it. They said the Golf 7 had 10 million lines of code.
Here are a couple of snippets of information:
"As recently as ten years ago, the software in a new car consisted of 10 million lines of code. In the meantime, that number has grown to 100 million.” That’s a ten-fold increase in just one generation of cars.
The arguably biggest challenge for the developers is the car’s internal and external network. The reason: all of a vehicle’s systems have to exchange data on a constant basis to ensure optimal functions. To the specialists this means that, whereas they used to be able to develop individual functions independently, they now have to take many interdependencies into consideration from the outset."
Another reason for so much software bugs and errors was that they created the software from scratch. And remember the control units in the car come from different companies so they had to make their software compatible and working flawlessly with VW software.

Thanks Massimo 2323,

All very interesting - adds to the knowledge base with regard to the MK8 and it's software problems.
It's like Microsoft Windows software and it's compatibility with different makers of hardware and software.
Reading reviews of for example of the Renault Mégane E-Tech EV which is using Android Automotive software, just wondering which is best, start software from scratch as VW has done or use readily available software like Renault among others have decided on.
I suppose when VAG finally get the software refined it is worth it financially rather than rely on an outside supplier.
The Mégane E-Tech software certainly looks attractive, fast and reliable.
I can remember reading a while back that from a purely financial perspective, longer term VW felt it would be beneficial to develop their vehicle software in-house, and it also removes dependency on a third party supplier.

I think it was always a risk that the first vehicles to get the newly developed in-house software would suffer a number of software gremlins. Hindsight’s a wonderful thing, but and as an outsider looking in, my perception is that VW may not have fully appreciated the enormity of task of developing a completely new ‘from the ground-up‘ software system within the timescales allocated. This compromised the quality of its initial development, and along with insufficient time being allocated to pre-launch testing and fixing errors, lead to many frustrated early adopters of the mk8 Golf.

Hopefully, VW have learned valuable lessons, and will be better prepared when developing the next generation of software for future vehicles.
