7800X3D here. AM5 is gonna be used until I think something like 2027.

Yeah saw that. "Stockpiling Parts" as in - purchasing components when they're on sale, ahead of eventually building a new system. Probably not the right word there.

==

What's the deal with RAM speeds and timings for CPU performance on AM5? I'm seeing that AMD made some changes to what used to be important relationships on AM4, but between the AMD changes and the DDR4-to-DDR5 changes I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it atm

I picked my ram based on what other people were saying worked. I think if you go too high on the timing it can cause issues with stability. You also definitely have to go into the bios and enable XMP and make sure the ram settings are correct. It defaults to a much lower speed.

I have DDR5-6000 CL30 paired with my cpu.

Stockpile cash, not parts. By the time you get around to using the parts you've been stockpiling, half of them will be obsolete. Buy all at once and buy the nicest stuff you can, enjoy it for a while, save up for the next upgrade(s).

I'm not smart but AMD builds seem to really like fast RAM. But they're also picky/sensitive, so make sure what you get is on the compatibility list.

Also on the 7800X3D.

Like 981 said, AMD likes fast ram. Using 6000 stuff as well.

Any keyboard experts? I think I'm gonna replace mine. The C on mine is getting kinda fucky. Sometimes the C doesn't work, sometimes I press it once and get 2 C's.

I was kinda thinking of something like a Keychron K8, or Ducky One 3. Just a simple tenkeyless keyboard with some rgb.

But then I saw the SteelSeries Apex Pro V2 and I think that might be the answer...

If I'm looking at something like a keychron or a ducky I have no idea how I'll decide on what switches to get. There's so many choices now and the only keys I've ever typed on are cherry reds.

Are there some keychron, ducky, or similar keyboards that I have to check out because of the switches used? I know some companies sell switch testers so I was considering ordering one.

I have a Filco Majestouch 2..(full on keyboard with num pad)..can't remember which colour switches but they are Cherry switches...a bit noisy, (you can get more noisy versions), but its a good feel, & I don't get wrist strain & my fingers don't hurt..

Test out as much as you can, if you've got a Micro Center close by that's even better. Mechanical keyboards have come down in price dramatically, and there's tons of switches out there. I'm typing this on a $20 Inland (house brand for Microcenter) with Cherry MX Reds (linear, no click/bump) and RGB, with a $25 set of PBT keycaps. Under $50 for a fantastic daily driver.

Programmability is a really nice thing available on some of the more spendy keyboards, ideally though look for something with no supporting software. WarOwl just did a video showcasing a new Corsair keyboard though that has variable switch response, software controlled but looks real slick for games. I'd say figure out what features you want/what your use case is first and then explore from there.

The steelseries apex has a pretty interesting feature, but I feel it may be difficult to use. The example they use is having a soft press to walk forward, and then pressing the button completely turns it into a run. So I could also do things like a soft press to move, and a complete press to dodge. I imagine it would take some getting used to in order for that kind of feature to be any good. It's also got adjustable keys so you can change how far the button needs to be pressed for it to register, that's probably like what the corsair does.

My closest microcenter is 150 miles away. I noticed a lot of the switch testers on amazon are frequently returned items, thought that was kinda funny.

I got a glorious keyboard and a glorious mouse right now, but I'm ditching all this stuff. I'm gonna go back to a logitech mouse. I swore them off for a bit because they always give me double click issues. The G502X that has upgraded switches is finally not at a crazy price. The older G502s are my favorite mouse, until they double click. The glorious software sucks and I need a mouse that can do game based profiles again.

The mouse decision was an easy one to make, but the keyboard market is drastically different than the last time I looked.

My G502 is about 9yrs old...still good & no wrist ache!...I still think I need to get a "pen" for Photoshop.....but having learnt AutoCAD 34yrs ago using a "puck" a good mouse is second nature!....

@sterkrazzy I hate you, aside from the 'remove before flight' style tag that looks fantastic from a cursory overview. I've been using a Glorious Model D- Wireless for a while and while I really like the shape, I agree that I barely touch the software. Ironically enough, I actually have double-clicking issues with this mouse, which I never had with my 502/602/305.

I have too many keyboards and shouldn't buy another right now 😖

That tag is definitely not going to be there on mine. lol
That's what I'm gonna get though. Especially after hearing about how consumer friendly the company is. They gave one of their 7 year old keyboards a software update that their new keyboards got. I don't think you'd ever see a company like logitech or razer doing something like that.

Their software isn't even software. You go to a webpage, make all the changes you want to make, and then you can close the page.

I always wanted a mini-ITX build, they're super neat and you really don't have limitations due to the physical size, so that's cool. How are temps? I was under the impression that open air was a bit of a detractor compared to a traditional case due to the lack of air direction, though I think that may have been more directly related to the wall-mount platform in question at the time.

Built this thing a couple years ago.
Recently upgraded it a bit.

Had a Delided 8600K paired with a 3070.

Now has 13600KF.

That is SO clean. What "case" is that?
