Missing charge timer on Mk8.5 GTE.

I have just traded in my Mk8 GTE for a Mk8.5 GTE. I used be able to charge on off peak electricity using a timer in the car. Unfortunately I am unable to do the same in my new car. In the (rubbish) online manual it says :-
  1. ‘Open Charging main menu in the Infotainment system’
  2. ‘Open the Charging loc. menu’
The problem is ‘Charging loc.’ is not available to open.

I am at a loss. I’m convinced this software has not been installed but if anyone can shed any light on this issue it would be much appreciated.

Have you tried going into the "Shop" in the infortainment screen and seeing if it offers you the option to install an extra app?

I have learnt that the charge timer has not been fitted to the latest Golf GTE (Mk8.5). I have not learnt this from VW. Neither the dealer or VW Customer Service were any use in answering this question. Someone gave me a link to a VW Tiguan forum where owners of the 1.5 eHybrid version (same power train) can confirm that the charge timer is missing. They are not happy.

I am furious. Why would VW remove this feature bearing in mind the previous GTE had it and so do all current ID models? On the plus side VW have now backlit the volume and temperature controls on the Mk8.5 Golfs. VW works in mysterious ways.

Thanks Massimo for the link. Below is my screen. You will notice that ‘Locations’ is missing. On my newer type of screen ‘Locations’ should now read ‘Charging loc.’ Not there. So, unless my car wasn’t set up properly when the car was manufactured VW have removed this very important function. A fear the latter 😡🤬.

Watching the video the charge timer should be there. Please find below photo of System Information showing version number. I tapped ‘Show all updates’ and none were available. I have spent ages trying to find ‘Charging loc.’ without success. Have the car booked in with my dealer at the end of the month but I have concluded that they are barely able to change engine oil.

Does the online ‘owners manual’ mention anything about it?

Can you help I have a Mk 8 GTE I set the e-manger to charge between midnight and 5am but it ignores it and starts charging earlier only notice this when I saw my smart meter was in the orange and checked my VW app and says the car it’s getting charged. This has happened a few times. The car already has at 30% when I plugged the charger in and direct charge is set to 0%.

Bad news and good news.

Took my Mk8.5 GTE to my dealer yesterday for them to find the missing in car drive battery charge timer which had been present in my previous Mk8. Much to my annoyance they confirmed that, like several on this forum have said, this useful function is not available.

BUT they did say that VW are planning to make this feature available sometime in the future. They had no idea as to the timeframe. Thought it might be done over the air.

I came to this thread and I did a small research which I have posted to another forum

TL;DR

Volkwagen introduced new charger from Elli with smart features like :

Save on charging costs with the ID. Charger 2. Use your home's solar power or make the most of dynamic electricity tariffs to charge your electric car when costs are lowest. Smart, efficient charging that is both cost-effective and sustainable.

and it small letters at the end of page :

The Smart Charging functions are initially available via a link between the vehicle app and the Elli Smart Charging app. In the future, the Smart Charging functions will be integrated directly into the brand app.

BUT

In the promo videos of car ( Golf or Tiguan ) the functionality was there!

For me it is unacceptable that this functionality is missing. I am using it all the time with Golf 8, you are setting when you wish to leave and if you wish pick charging time to be enabled and that's it.

Now what to do ? To calculate how many hours you need to charge until you leave and then push the button from your app ?

Out of curiosity @Maturedriver , in Golf 8 it has the normal speed and reduce speed for charging. Now has more options or it is the same ?

In my Mk8.5 GTE it only has ‘Reduce AC charging current’. Since I always charge with a 13 amp granny charger this function is superfluous. Like you said in the other forum the ‘Departure time’ is only for pre heating. I have seven hours of off peak electricity and I have to go to the garage at midnight to turn on the charger which is not ideal. The failure of installing a charge timer is really the only negative thing about the car.
