Hey guys and gals,

tldr; at bottom

What happened today causing the CEL: So I was accelerating pushing the gas going up a steep hill, 2nd gear and once I hit 4k rpm, it all of a sudden acted as if I hit the brakes, when I didn't at all touch brakes nor had the ebrake on. Now whenever acceleratng and it hits 3k rpm (except in first gear) it shudders, acting as if I hit the brakes, loses power and slows down until I let off the gas and let rpm's fall. Repeats whenever accelerating up until 3k rpm. Also, since this happened, the car barely starts, stuttering for a few seconds before barely starting. I'll link a youtube video if you want to see how it starts:

Also, idk if this matters at all, but on Friday I noticed I lost a silicone tag thing about the size and shape of a quarter under the passenger seat, that looks like it creeped into a hole under the seat to fall in between the carpet and the floorboard. Idk if this would have anything to do with this CEL,thought I might mention it. I'll post a picture of this floorboard/carpet hole under the passenger seat.

I'm so worried/frustrated. I just put in a new clutch in this car, after buying it just 2 months ago, the brakes and rotors both front needed replacement after 2 weeks, clutch went out after 2 months, now this... The car only had 30k mi!! 2017 GTI sport. Previous owner had a Carbon fiber intake, stg 2, borla exhaust. I had him sell it to me with a stock exhaust and stg 1 HT to pass smog in order to sell. Ofcourse he listed the car as "mechanically perfect" in cars.com... He damn well knew what was up. What I now find weird, is he really wanted me to shift gears at 3k rpm on the test drive. Now it's making sense...I'm so worried, the clutch just screwed me financially. I can't afford a big repair rn... I'm 29, and I've just had 4 hip surgeries and a back surgery the past few years that has me hurting financially, I just can't afford a big repair. I barely got the clutch done thanks to affirm financing... I'm a grown man that rarely cries, but holy shi** I damn near did today...

I'm taking it to my local VW specialist mechanic that has good rates asap. If anyone has any input as to possibilities are what to look for/mention to the mechanic I'd greatly appreciate it.

TLDR;
Accelarting up a steep hilll fast in 2nd gear, car shuddered and acted as if I hit the breaks when I clearly didn't. Now car stutters/breaks on its own/loses power significantly once it hits 3k rpm, and car barely starts now. CEL on.

First thing that should’ve happened was to provide us with the code for the CEL. That could be anything from a bad battery/starter to plugs and coils. The car is running so there is hope, try not to stress out yet.

When your mechanic pulls the codes, post them here. Does it throw a CEL when the engine cuts out?

Are you on good terms with the previous owner, and close enough to give him a visit? I'd have him totally unmarry the AP which brings it back to stock. Eliminate the variables.

My guess is something to do with the stock exhaust swap. Boost leak, oxygen sensor, etc. Gotta have the codes.

We got along great. He answered all of my texts and calls swiftly about anything I needed, when I told him the clutch was shot, ofcourse he didn't respond. Now he just moved to another state, which is why he sold the car... Bc he was moving I negotiated 1.5k$ lower, for he was set to move in a few weeks. I just told him I'd be willing to buy the car for 1.5k less listed, as I was comfortable with that. Then later after agreeing, he told me everything about him moving.

He was a cool guy, he must have been mid/late-30's and I'm 29. Felt like an older co-worker relationship. he went to great lengths to get everything ready and paid for for the sale with my lender, like having it ready for smog. he then offered to smog, then swap back to stg 2 and reattach the borla, but in CA stg 2 is no longer sold here unfortunately..

So 3 weeks ago, I flashed the tune back to stock before taking it to the mechanic for the clutch failure. It's still currently stock flash tuned.

I'll update with codes..

I know it little consolation now, but if in the future when test driving a car, if you show up and the car is already warmed up, walk away. And if the owner tells you not to do something like not going over 3k or anything that isn't unreasonable, ignore him and do it anyway, or walk away.

Was this happening before the clutch install, or only after?

It's not that he didn't tell me not to go over 3k rpm, it's like he was always like, "ya you can shift at 3k", and was just kinda trying to get me to shift more at 3k. He didn't say it directly, though. It didn't seem weird, bc I was going over 3k rpm like half the time. But now that this popped up, it makes sense... That I can't go over 3k now...

No none of this happened before the clutch install. This happened at about 2k mi agter new clutch. I was in 2nd gear going up a very very steep hill in West Hollywood, giving lots of juice in 2nd gear, then once it hit 4k rpm, it gave out...
