I have the same issue, I believe it's the exhaust. Some folks like hearing the exhaust, I find the drone annoying

I find my Golf very quiet too. I've got a Life on 16 inch Nexen tyres. Must be honest, I'd never heard of them (research suggests they're South Korean) but they are the quietest tyres I've ever had.

Interesting the EU Tyre regs give the Nexen tyres the lower external rolling noise level compared with the Goodyear & Bridgestones VW fit.
Wet grip they score an 'A' same as the Goodyear|& Michelin tyres with the Bridgestones a 'B' classification.

I'm with 17' Michelin Primacy 4. It came from factory equipped with them. The tires, I think, are a bit harder as it can be seen from the tests, especially on wet surface. My golf is a bit noisy with them, especially on older grainier roads. For the winter season i bought ContiWinter Contact TS870 and they are a lot quiter, the handling feels softer.
