Suspension Options for an Awesome Daily Driver or Track Car

HYDE16

Ready to race!
I have spent a lot of time on the threads learning the ins and outs of our suspension upgrade options. I finally found the time to compile a semi-complete list of the MK5 through MK6 GTI suspension upgrades. My goal here is to provide a comprehensive list of suspension upgrades to help the community. I spent several days compiling these options on my own and I will continue to expand the list to bushings, full coilover, spring and shock & strut options as time goes on. In NO WAY am I affiliated, paid by or benefiting from posting this information. I do not list hyperlinks or product advertisements, only average pricing to give everyone an idea of the costs to make the best choices based on their budget.

For my own build I needed to layout all options and label them either “awesome daily driver” (low NVH, safe for the average driver) or “track car” (possibly higher NVH, stiffer, for experienced drivers). This thread is to pay homage to the heavy hitters such as Simmsled, The Bruce, Bostonaudi, Junker, ViRtUaLheretic, GodSquadMandrake, Tyrol Mike, LePatron and others that have tested these components and provided feedback for the community. I consider them the official suspension gurus and decided to condense their findings into one thread.

I’m personally looking for the “awesome daily driver”, striking a fine balance between a baby daycare shuttle during the week, spirited mountain warrior on the weekends and then an occasional HPDE Green Group track car. I'm trying to increase some stiffness, correct or improve suspension geometry, improve traction, and realize better overall response from driver input while limiting NVH, rattles and feeling beat up from long drives.

MY CURRENT “AWESOME DAILY DRIVER” SETUP:

Springs
Installed Driver Gear springs with new MK6 GTI replacement strut mounts, bearings, nuts, bolts (~3/4” drop)
Sway Bars
Installed H&R 26mm front and 22mm rear, both set to soft
Front Subframe
Installed TyrolSport DeadSet Rigid Collar kit has been installed along with replacing the other subframe bolts with Audi subframe bolt – part number N-908-235-01
Pendelum Mount
Installed HPA red 75 durometer polyurethane lower mount and kept OEM rubber upper mount. Originally had the Autotech metal insert which destroyed my lower mount, installed the HPA mount but realized I still had the OEM rubber upper mount.
Other Factors
New Jersey roads, 4-door MK6 GTI, 30,000 miles with recent Peloquin LSD/USP Steel Shift Forks/Motul Gear 300 fluid installed, Stoptech BBK, South Bend Stage 3 Clutch Disk
Future Plans
APR Stage 3, 19” Hartmann 256 wheels, Continental DW 225/35/19 tires

Happy to see this on the forum back again !!:clap:

Springs
Installed Driver Gear springs with new MK6 GTI replacement strut mounts, bearings, nuts, bolts (~3/4” drop)

On a "ADD" DG springs surely are the best option for most of us.

Sway Bars
Installed H&R 26mm front and 22mm rear, both set to soft

H&R sways are extremely well made. I'd try the rear bar on stiff at least for a few weeks.
If you even feel a need for more consider to replace the rear bar for the 24 mm.

Pendelum Mount
Installed HPA red 75 durometer polyurethane lower mount and kept OEM rubber upper mount. Originally had the Autotech metal insert which destroyed my lower mount, installed the HPA mount but realized I still had the OEM rubber upper mount.

Avoid metal inserts !! :yikes:

Other Factors
New Jersey roads, 4-door MK6 GTI, 30,000 miles with recent Peloquin LSD/USP Steel Shift Forks/Motul Gear 300 fluid installed, Stoptech BBK, South Bend Stage 3 Clutch Disk

LSD = one of the best mods of all !!

Future Plans
APR Stage 3, 19” Hartmann 256 wheels, Continental DW 225/35/19 tires

After running 19" for 3 years (and swapping frequently between 17/18/19") I'd never buy 19" wheels again.
19" look great, but ride bad and slow the car. :(

SUSPENSION UPGRADE OPTIONS:

”Awesome Daily Driver” – Shocks & Struts
Option 1 = $657 Bilstein Sport Non-Adjustable Shocks & Struts for lowered vehicles
Option 2 = $717 Bilstein HD Non-Adjustable Shocks & Struts for stock height vehicles
Reference thread = http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147240

I don't wanna be boring... keep in mind there are Mk.V and Mk.VI options of both HD/B6 and Sport/B8.
Both fit Mk.V and Mk.VI, but the Mk.V ones are stiffer. It does not matter if B6 or B8. B6 are stock length,
B8/Sport come with shortened rebound.

”Track Car” – Shocks & Struts
TBD = Need your input

Not a pure track setup, but "track worthy":

- Mk.V Bilsteins
- Öhlins Road & Track
- Koni Sport

Or coilovers like Bilstein PSS, Sachs Performance, KW V3 and many others.

”Awesome Daily Driver” – Lowering Springs
TBD = Need your input

Again - DG springs !!

For European members: Euro Eibach Pro springs are linear and ride great (NOT the ones the sell in the US).

”Track Car” – Lowering Springs
TBD = Need your input

Hard to tell if there are any "track worthy" lowering springs.
If any - DGs, some H&R and Eibach.

”Awesome Daily Driver” – Coilovers
TBD = Need your input

- Bilstein PSS (B14 and B16)
- Bilstein B16 RideControl
- Sachs Performance (rides awesome)
- KW V3
- Eibach Pro Street S

”Track Car” – Coilovers
TBD = Need your input

- AST
- Bilstein CSC Clubsport
- KW Clubsport 2-way/3-way
- Eibach R1/R2
- H2sport modded Öhlins
....
....
....

Strut Mounts
Option 1 = $64 ECS Front Suspension Install Kit (MK6 GTI mounts, bearings [part number 6N0 412 249 C], nuts, bolts)
Option 2 = $96 Audi TT strut mounts (part number 8J0 412 331) and $20 bearings (part number 6N0 412 249 D)
Option 3 = $100 034 Motorsport Track Density 75 durometer strut mounts and $20 bearings (part number 6N0 412 249 D)
Reference thread = http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=172387
Feedback = Considering the Audi TT strut mounts, strut bearings, bolts and nuts

On a "ADD": TT ones. Proper value, reliable, proven.
On track you want solid (pillow ball) adjustable mounts.

”Awesome Daily Driver” – Sway Bars
TBD = Need your input

front: 24 - 26 mm
rear: 22 - 24 mm

”Track Car” – Sway Bars
TBD = Need your input

Depends on you springs rates, tires, track and taste.
With a street suspension running on track you want at least some stiffer sways to reduce excessive roll.

”Track Car” - Rear Anti-Sway Bar Support Brackets
Option 1 = $90 NEUSPEED RACE SERIES Rear Anti-Sway Bar Support Bracket

Is there any review on this forum?

”Track Car” - Front Sway Bar End Link
Option 1 = $150 Whiteline KLC167 Front Sway Bar End Link Assembly
Feedback = Not needed for stock height or under 1” drop as per Simmsled

”Track Car” - Rear Sway Bar End Link
Option 1 = $150 Whiteline KLC141 Rear Sway Bar End Link Assembly
Option 2 = $165 034 Motorsport Rear Sway Bar End Link Assembly
Option 3 = $170 Neuspeed Rear Sway Bar End Link Assembly

You only need adjustable ones if you want your suspension corner weighted.
Corner weights need to be adjusted if you run higher springs rates.

Whiteline endlinks are solidly made and very strong.

Both BSH and Neuspeed are known for knocking noises and non-adjustable.

”Track Car” - Replacement / Upgraded Rear Sway Bar Bracket Bushings
Option 1 = $98 Hotchkis 23291063 1-1/16" Diameter Billet Sway Bar Bracket Bushings

I'd just replace my sway bar bushings when they're worn. Consider to get new bushings from
your sway bar manufacturer.

I know - the Hotchkis BRACKETS are extremely well made. ;)

”Awesome Daily Driver” - Pendelum Mounts
Option 1 = $190 HPA Street polyurethane lower mount with OEM rubber upper mount
Option 2 = $60 034 Motorsport Street Density 60 durometer dogbone upper and lower mounts
Option 3 = $30 BSH Torque Mount Insert
Option 4 = $40 BFI Stage 1 Torque Mount Insert
Option 5 = $13 Energy Suspension Torque Mount Insert
Option 6 = $20 Autotech Torque Mount Insert

I believe most are very similar. Most important: you get one.

”Track Car” - Pendelum Mounts
Option 1 = $190 HPA Track polyurethane lower mount with OEM rubber upper mount
Option 2 = $60 034 Motorsport Track Density 60 durometer dogbone upper and lower mounts

Most important (on track/autoX): You don't forget upper mounts.

”Awesome Daily Driver” - Motor and Transmission Mounts
Option 1 = $240 034 Motorsport Street Density 60 durometer engine mount and transmission mount
Option 2 = $149 SPM engine mount and $149 transmission mount
Option 3 = $190 Black Forest Industries Stage 1 engine mount and $200 Black Forest Industries Stage 1 transmission mount

Avoid poly engine mounts on a DD.

If you drive decent stay with the stock one (or replace them from time to time).
New ones are cheap on the web !!

”Track Car” - Motor and Transmission Mounts

Option 2 = $190 Black Forest Industries Stage 2 engine mount and $200 Black Forest Industries Stage 2 transmission mount

.....
- THS
- VibraTech

Uprated upper mounts are extremely important on track.

”Track Car” - Front Control Arms
Option 1 = $TBD Passat alloy control arms
Reference thread = http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123479&highlight=control+arms

... or TT ones and SuperPro 'Supalloy' LCA. More + adjustable camber !!

”Track Car” - Front Spindles
Option 1 = $TBD Passat alloy spindles pair
Option 2 = $800 H2 Sport spindles pair

I paid less than 200 for used (but fresh) Passat/S3 spindles. :)
Keep in mind they are aluminium alloy and improve your steering.

”Awesome Daily Driver” - Front End Rear Position LCA Bushings
Option 1 = $250 Audi TT rubber bushings – part number 8J0 199 231
Option 2 = $150 Audi S3 rubber bushings – part number S3CAK
Reference thread = http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140113

Consider FEBI made TT replacement rubber bushings - $ 20,-- !!
These so come without the aluminium console and need to be pressed in.

”Track Car” - Front End Rear Position LCA Bushings
Option 1 = $395 H2 Sport Spherical Bearings
Option 2 = $90 Whiteline W53196 Polyurethane Control Arm Bushings
Option 3 = $203 Whiteline KCA316 Polyurethane Anti Lift Caster Kit
Reference thread = http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140113

Don't forget the stock TT/Febi and SuperPro ALK bushes. Well made !!

”Track Car” - Front End Front Position LCA Bushings
Option 1 = $52 Whiteline W0503 Polyurethane Control Arm Bushings

Whiteline and SuperPro.

”Track Car” - Rear End Trailing Arm Bushings
Option 1 = $50 Whiteline W0504 Polyurethane trailing arm bushing kit
Option 2 = $250 034 Motorsport spherical bearing upgrade kit
Option 3 = $995 H2 Sport Rear End Bearing Kit

....
- SuperPro

Bump Steer
Option 1 = $200 Whiteline bump steer adjustment kit

Ken has made not so good experiences.

Steering Rack Bushing
Option 1 = $33 Whiteline W13204 Polyurethane Steering Rack Bushing

Not a huge step, but cheap.

Chassis Braces
Option 1 = $145 Stern Rear Subframe Brace
Option 2 = $TBD Unibrace UB, XB

I'd prefer the Stern.

Dogbone
Option 1 = TyrolSport will be releasing a kit to work with the OEM dogbone which will limit the front to back movement between December and January
Option 2 = $149 SPM Pendelum Mount
Option 3 = $140 BSH Pendelum Mount

I'd prefer to keep the stock one and just replace the bushings.

Ready to race!
After running 19" for 3 years (and swapping frequently between 17/18/19") I'd never buy 19" wheels again. 19" look great, but ride bad and slow the car. :(

Bruce, what's your take on this setup if the 19" wheels are lighter than the OEM 18" Detroit wheels? In addition, my front BBK actually reduced weight by a few pounds per front corner. Aside from the wheel size, if the weight is down on the front end is this still a major concern?

I don't wanna be boring... keep in mind there are Mk.V and Mk.VI options of both HD/B6 and Sport/B8. Both fit Mk.V and Mk.VI, but the Mk.V ones are stiffer. It does not matter if B6 or B8. B6 are stock length, B8/Sport come with shortened rebound.

Just an FYI for the MK6 GTI guys looking at Bilstein, seems some sites are still selling MK5 shock & strut part numbers for the MK6 GTI, as per Wes at Bilstein, here are the correct B6 and B8 part numbers for the MK6.

Front:
2010-2011 Golf and TDI – Bilstein B8 sport 35-158745
2010-2012 GTI - Bilstein B8 Sport 35-108191
2010-2012 GTI - Bilstein B6 HD 35-108177

Rear:
2010-2011 Golf and TDI – Bilstein B8 Sport 24-158756
2010-2012 GTI - Bilstein B8 Sport 24-178006
2010-2012 GTI - Bilstein B6 HD 24-172936

I believe most are very similar. Most important: you get one. Most important (on track/autoX): You don't forget upper mounts.

So here's a question, a lot of these products replace or fill in the pendelum/dogbone rubber bushings underneath the car. Within the pendelum/dogbone mount assembly there are two bushings, an upper and lower. these products generally replace the lower rubber bushing and leave the upper OEM rubber bushing in place.

-Will this deteriorate the upper rubber bushing faster?
-034 Motorsport street or track density bushings seem to be the only versions that replace both lower and upper pendelum/dogbone rubber bushings. Should we go this route?

Avoid poly engine mounts on a DD.

It seems the 034 Motorsport Engine Mounts are rubber, street durometer (60) has had some negative feedback with deterioration, track durometer (80) seems ok and closer to the durometer of other polyurethane kits. The SPM, BFI and BSH Engine Mounts seem to all be polyurethane.

Bruce, can you recommend non-polyurethane Motor and Transmission Mounts?

... or TT ones and SuperPro 'Supalloy' LCA. More + adjustable camber !!

I paid less than 200 for used (but fresh) Passat/S3 spindles. :) Keep in mind they are aluminium alloy and improve your steering.

Can you tell me if the Passat or TT spindles or LCA's will work with a BBK (Stoptech, Brembo, Forge)? I'd love to do the control arms and spindles but I want to make sure everything bolts on correctly.

Consider FEBI made TT replacement rubber bushings - $ 20,-- !! These so come without the aluminium console and need to be pressed in.

I found a few FEBI (Bilstein) TT replacement bushings for $20!
Way cheaper than the Genuine Audi TT LCA bushings.
So are these the actual rubber bushings in the Audi TT mount?
I know the Audi TT LCA bushings are around $200 and come already pressed into the aluminum housings, we would have to press them out of the Audi housings and into the GTI housings. Are these FEBI bushings the same quality?

Very probably better due to the lower rotational and unsprung mass.
Don't forget the lower profile tires are still stiffer.

-Will this deteriorate the upper rubber bushing faster?

- I think all the poly inserts are fine on a DD

It seems the 034 Motorsport Engine Mounts are rubber, street durometer (60) has had some negative feedback with deterioration, track durometer (80) seems ok and closer to the durometer of other polyurethane kits. The SPM, BFI and BSH Engine Mounts seem to all be polyurethane.

Bruce, can you recommend non-polyurethane Motor and Transmission Mounts?

Keep in mind it's not just a question of durometer. Rubber has better hysteresis/damping properties.
This is a major advantage of rubber on reducing NVH.
There are also some design differences (shape of the rubber and consoles). From THS and VibraTech I know these work well.

Can you tell me if the Passat or TT spindles or LCA's will work with a BBK (Stoptech, Brembo, Forge)? I'd love to do the control arms and spindles but I want to make sure everything bolts on correctly.

I cannot recommend TT spindles due to steering rod + rack issues and the longer steering knuckle.
The S3/passat ones steering knuckle is even shorter than stock GTI (more direct steering / less steering effort).
Sadly there are issues with the S3 spindles on fitting existing BBKs. You might need a different bracket (designed for S3).

There's some info on a S3/TT arm thread. Febi is a German OEM, so I think these bushes are same quality as Audi OE.
At least for only 20 bucks worth a try. You cannot go wrong with these.

HYDE16

Ready to race!
For 19" tires I'm between 225/35 or 235/35 Continental DW. The 235 gains less than 0.5" in width compared to the 225.

I'll look into these FEBI Rear LCA bushings, sucks though I bookmarked that TT/S3 Rear LCA bushings comparison thread and had my mind made up for the TT bushings but didn't want to press them out of the included housings then into the GTI housings. If these are an OEM level replacement for the Audi TT rear LCA bushing then they must be the same quality and it's MUCH cheaper.

I can't seem to find them though, the ones I do find are labeled "front, front" leading me to believe they are for the front LCA, not rear. Can you show me a link or help me find the exact ones please?

I'll skip the Passat/TT spindles as the BBK will not transfer.

I will look into the Passat/TT LCA's

For the ADD, what motor/trans mounts and dogbone bushings would you recommend?

BTW while I installed my Hotchkis RSB brackets last weekend I was looking at the rear suspension and noted that the Neuspeed subframe brace will not work the Stern subframe brace as there is very tight tolerances. The Neuspeed subframe brace MIGHT work with the new Unibrace as you could probably bow/bend the Unibrace to make room for the extra 2 or 3mm the Neuspeed brace will add per side.

I'll add this link to go with the Ohlins, since the perches on the struts are removeable. I hear that the tolerance on the ID is a little loose, but easy to fill with a layer or two of tape. It may be in my future if I want to go a little lower at some point.

Skip 19" wheels, go to 17" for Jersey roads. 19" = big expenditure for performance loss, bent wheels and rough ride. If you go 19 you want very soft springs and shocks.
