Please no political war but I heard Trump in today's press report saying that the government is going to help the airline and cruise ship industries.

No war here, but honestly, Trump says a lot of things that are off the cuff and aren't accurate or never happen, so I take what he says with a grain of salt.

Why is it recommended that people living paycheck to paycheck somehow have a 6mo reserve in liquid assets... but multi-billion dollar corporations financially melt down at the slightest hint at instability?

My wife is extremely lucky. Her company just battened down the hatches. They terminated all temps and contractors. They then dissolved a future projects team, and used those employees to fill the vacated temp and contract slots.

The owner/COO reduced his salary to $0.00/mo, and all executives took a 25% pay cut.

All internal incentive/game programs that have cash value (points) have been suspended, and payouts to employee accounts from them halted (most of these were basically beta testing of future projects). Employee point accounts are still open and redemption of points already earned is unchanged.

All purchases not already budgeted require COO signature. Complete gutting/renovation of one building, prompted by a fire caused by a Samsung cellphone blowing up, continues until completion of the currently active work/contracts.

COO sends out biweekly update info to all employees (about 5000 globally) as situations change. Has been keeping tabs on the relief bill and informed the employees that any money to the company will be distributed based on income brackets, bottom up. He’s done he same with all the recent “stimulus” funds passed down. He distributed those funds to everyone’s 401k.

Employees that had laptops were instructed to work from home weeks ago, and laptops for those that didn’t have them yet were purchased by the COO personally to expedite getting his people home by cutting the red tape.

Needless to say their morale is high and, honestly it’s refreshing.

I work in a position that was deemed “nationally essential” years ago, so I’m pretty safe for now.

Been trying to help out where I can. Tipping the baristas and the dudes that make my breakfast burritos to go, $20 a visit. Paying (hemorrhaging?) my daycare bills, even though my kids are hunkered down in the woods with my parents. It’s hard because I normally help others by physical assistance and the like. Social distancing and this damn lingering cough keeps me isolated.

I feel for those hurting, just keep your witts and get creative, don’t be afraid to ask for help and accept it when offered. In 1998 I was living in my car using the CRV to eat. These are the times when you learn who your true friends are.
Wow now that is impressive, but for that company and yourself! Kudos to all!

My company is taking things pretty reasonably as well. Only furloughed a few non-essential employees, suspended expenses/bonuses that werent already paid, and future company events. They are tryign their best to weather the storm.

Sounds like a great company....you guys hiring for any product manager/ product owner roles when this gets over?? ?‍♂️?‍♂️

Cruise ship companies shouldn't get a penny from the United States. They skirt around paying any taxes by operating under foreign jurisdiction. I say fuck em.

Enterprise Architects? lol

Not my company... I’d have made the jump to her company years ago if: 1. We didn’t want to avoid all eggs in one basket, and 2. They could match my benefits/retirement package.

If you wanted to do these jobs, you’d have to move to the mothership in Minneapolis. The satellite offices are all sales force workers, and sales managers.

I don't think this 2 week quarantine is gonna work very well. There's just too many people ignoring it and too many people not on the same page. New York issued a stay at home order and a whole bunch of them flew to Florida. The governor here is holding out as long as he can before he has to do the same I think. He ordered everybody that flew in from New York to self isolate for 2 weeks, but they just came here so they wouldn't have to. There's been a bunch of mayors that have ordered their cities to stay at home, so some of our state is quarantined and some of it pretty much isn't. Where I'm at most businesses are still open, but business is dead. The only businesses that have really changed anything would be restaurants and healthcare related places.

It has been helping otherwise the hospitals would have already been overwhelmed.

I don't think we're out of the woods there, especially in the large cities. My worry is that this will linger a long time as it slowly spreads to rural areas. If it mutates, you could see it make the rounds again. Japan has already confirmed the first person to get it twice. More fun news, dogs can be infected. I'm surprised china hasn't been slaughtering dogs at this point.

Just since Monday the US has gone from 35k confirmed cases to 55k cases. It's spreading faster here than anywhere else right now.

Yeah, our curve is literally straight up right now. I'm hoping the last 2 weeks begins to have an affect, but I'm not hopeful. It's not like we did a real lockdown like China. In some states, they're not doing anything.

Due to the density here, it's expected.

I agree that we're not out of the woods yet, I only stated that if it wasn't for these preventive steps that have been taken, hospitals would have been overwhelmed already.

Some stats here:

Yup, we're day 9 into "15 days to slow the spread" and it hasn't slowed down at all.

This is exactly what will happen and there's no real way to stop it, short of an authoritarian type lock down. People need to seriously buckle down and do their part, but unfortunately all I'm reading shows otherwise

The big issue is that it's going to take us a month of increase testing to really know if we're having an affect. Honestly, we don't even know what our starting point is, because we just started testing in the last 9 days and it's still pretty slow. It's insane that we are where we are with testing with having a month or 2 head start on the rest of the world.

Seems like most people still aren't being tested too. You have to be high risk, like if you flew in from another country recently, or severely sick. We had a salesman out for a few weeks that just came back this week. They x-rayed his chest and tested him for the flu, but they told him he doesn't qualify for the corona test because he hadn't left the country recently. There was a guy that died in our town who his wife and daughter said was homebody. He went no where except a local lodge and a casino, and he was tested positive and it killed him a couple days later. It's pretty clear people are getting this that aren't leaving the country, but they still wouldn't test him.

My mom works at a small doctors office, her bosses are a married couple and plus their daughter works with them. Their family went to get tested for it yesterday as they've all been sick, and they were told it'll probably be about 5 days before they get the test results back. Normally it's 3 days to get results, but it's been taking 5, which is just another problem.
