Most people don't understand how our tax brackets work in the US anyhow. They still believe the rich are being Taxed to death with the misbelief that ALL of their earnings are being taxed at a single %. If the US had a flat tax, our taxes would be insanely easier than they are. The rich are not crying about their taxes.

I would definitely be in favor of a flat rate tax. Better yet though is like Europe with the sales tax. Then the people buying the most are paying the most without being able to avoid taxation. The link below explains the Fair Tax Plan.

Nope...just set up a Ltd company which buys all the items & then claim the sales tax (VAT) back through the company..why do you think very rich people have companies which purchase their homes, private jets etc...& rent it back to yourself...

Doesn't matter what systems you put in place human nature is to find a way around the system......

Those with loads of money can pay "specialists" to find legal ways around it...those at the other end do it by being criminal.....whilst those in the middle get royally screwed from both ends...

We do the same thing here in the US too, just more for legal liability reasons. The Tax breaks if used right are just a gimmie.

Regulations could be put in place to counter that so that the rich person's company pays the tax. It still would be vastly better than our current income tax structure. Plus anyone traveling into the US would be paying the sales tax also. If you read all of the Fair Tax plan ultimately products would come down in price that would offset the tax. I'm not going to go in depth on that but if you read the whole Fair Tax plan it's all explained.

The issue is you'll have companies lobbying that the additional tax will make them non-solvent, or that they'll have to downsize and cut labor forces due to the new taxes and then explain how that'll hurt the economy even more. It's the same song and dance we've played for years here in the US. I mean you have Corporations fighting to be granted human rights as people under "We the People" in the constitution.

We pay "sales" tax on pretty much everything..20% on most items....huge amounts on fuel (also huge amounts of other tax on fuel)......there is no such thing as a "fair" tax system....& those rich enough will always find ways around..

They play around with exempt goods under VAT currently anyhow, don't they? Shuffle around the various items until it's in their favor, or reclass certain items.

I speak li
I will start
If you have no SS number you do not pay taxes. How the hell you say?? Well you see, you can't legally be on payroll therefore you get paid cash.
Sure, maybe you pay tax on items purchased but thats where it ends.
Don't worry, there's always MEDI-CAL in the great state of California..
Come to the great California, we will pay for all your needs!! Meanwhile the state goes to shit.
I'm not gonna argue with all you peeps. There are some facts for you to ponder. Im all for helping others, but there SHOULD NOT be any law saying I'm obligated.(my tax dollars and yours)
Kinda like Snoop Dog said, everybody got they cups but aint chipped in

We already covered that, most use fake SSN's and we were talking about federal benefit. Seems like we should document immigrant workers though, huh?

The issue with flat taxing Federal incomel tax is that most state and local taxes are regressive, so you'd end up with the poor paying a much higher percentage of their income in total taxation, i.e. percentage of income paid when you add all local, state, excise and federal taxes. Right now, we're already pretty close to flat, except the very wealthy pay a way lower percentage in total taxation, especially when you add all the money hidden offshore, which we can only really estimate.

Flat tax arguments always ignore the rest of our tax system, and frame taxes as only federal income taxes, in order to fool people into supporting raising their own taxes.

The reality is, income taxes were never intended to tax the poor and middle class, they were intended to raise money for wars and defense from those with excessive income.

& from my above link on the UK VAT system.."sales tax"

""Opponents of VAT claim VAT is regressive and is paid by all consumers whether they are rich or poor, young or old.[10] The poorest also spend a higher proportion of their disposable income on VAT than richest.[7] The Office for National Statistics report showed that in 2009/10 the poorest 20% spent 8.7% of their gross income on VAT, whereas the richest 20% spent only 4.0% of their gross income on VAT.[53] Similarly, the poorest 20% spent 9.7% of their disposable income on VAT, whereas the richest 20% spent only 5.2% of their disposable income on VAT.[53] Supporters of VAT claim VAT is progressive as consumers who spend more pay more VAT.[5] However, according to the definition, VAT is neither progressive nor regressive, since the rate neither increases or decreases with the taxable amount.[54][55][56] ""

Like I said there is NO such thing as a fair tax system...
