Ukraine: WAR Huh - What Is It Good For Absorootly Nothing

Didn't read many of these but we keep seeing the theme of Russia's failing attempt. Is this optimism or reality? When will they pull pack and declare their operation over and therefore victory?
Good question. It is obvious that the war (sorry, "special military operation") didn't go nearly as expected. They've committed 85% of their military personnel, have suffered great losses and their economy is in tatters. Their reputation is mud and will take decades to rebuild - if ever.

This campaign will go down in history as one of the greatest miscalculations.

Early on in this thread I posted Dan Hoffman's comments that Russia's goal was to flatten Ukraine - that goal they are accomplishing but there is no way that they can gracefully disengage - maybe to the Russian people, but not to the rest of the world.

It may be interesting to see what the Russian population will say a couple years down the road when they get more information.

How the west continues to support Ukraine will, in part, determine what happens with Taiwan.

very good message to the treasonous basketball idiot that Biden has taken on as his special project:
We found in our research that you requested the National Anthem not be played at sporting events. We find it odd that now you are requesting the citizens of the United States to pay for your release from a jail in Russia. Yes, we the taxpayers are paying for all of those diplomats working on your release. Our Government told you, and all fellow Americans in Russia, to leave Russia after the invasion of the Ukraine. You play basketball in a country that is known to treat Americans badly. You fly a great deal and must know by now, all the rules of what one can bring into a country. All of us that travel know the rules for entering a foreign country. You are a guest and must go by the rules of the land. By your own admission, you were attempting to bring an illegal substance into a country that is known for its long prison sentences. You had to know this because you are making a million dollars a year to play a game and hold a college degree. At six feet nine inches tall, you know that security officers are going to focus on you from the moment you stand in the boarding pass line. We also noticed that you are now saying you placed the drugs in your luggage by accident. Please, that is something an 18 year old would say. We also found out that your net worth is somewhere around $ 5 million bucks for playing a game. For old guys like us, living on a fixed income, that’s a lot of money for just playing a game. Don’t get us wrong; we are not against you. We all went and fought so all Americans can have the freedom to make their own choices. We just hope the next time you have to endure the playing of that little poem, you will pay close attention to the, “ Land of the free,” part.

Fake displays of patriotism before sporting events have nothing to do with freedom or patriotism. A lot of the veterans with this same sentiment slap back the blue and Trump stickers all over the back of their trucks, so they can fuck right off. What they support is authoritarian white nationalism, which is exactly why some black athletes oppose fake patriotism at the beginning of sporting events.

I'm not going to wade into the whole national anthem thing, but as a general rule, it pisses me off whenever we have to spend significant taxpayer resources to rescue someone from their own stupidity. You needed to go hiking in Iran and now they're inventing charges against you? Enjoy your life in prison. You really needed to see the historical sites in North Korea but now they're pretending you're a spy? Enjoy being glorious leader's new trophy. Russia is openly hostile to Americans, drugs, and homosexuality, but she chose to go anyway and took drugs with her. Being American does mean you deserve to have your rights protected, but it shouldn't be a get out of jail free card for whatever stupid shit people decide to do.

Not to mention that we are considering letting two very bad guys free in exchange.

First grain ship leaves and what rural Russian's believe - round-up (msn.com)
It's not uncommon to hear people in Moscow or St Petersburg criticise Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But further away from these major cities, Russians mainly get their view of the world from television which is controlled by the Kremlin.

Hang on this sounds familiar
