Yesterday, technically - but I bought it!
After years of debating what a suitable replacement for my GTI would be I finally decided there was really one choice. Another Golf lol.
The only other cars on my short list were a F/G80 M3, RS5 Sportback, Raptor or even a Model 3 Performance.
I did "reserve" one of the new Scout trucks, but that was really just for fun since it was only a $100 refundable commitment.
Anyway, the GTI has been bullet proof in the 10 years and 106,000 miles I've owned it...up until abut 6 months ago.
I was having a coolant leak which resulted in a replaced thermostat housing and water pump along with a few other "while you're there" items.
End of last week, I had another coolant leak, it ended up that a connection at the oil cooler was going bad and dripping oil down onto the new t-stat housing which caused a connection there to swell, and start leaking.
The dealer fixed that all up, but while I was there they had a white R in the showroom. We worked up a deal where everyone was happy, and the rest is history.

Solid upgrade!!
Most definitely! The infotainment and haptics will take some getting used to, but my initial impression is that it is not nearly as bad as the internet has made it out to be.
But everything else is a big upgrade coming from my '15 S.
I also debated for quite a while that if I did end up with an R, would it be DSG, or M/T?
Well, with it being a 2024, and the '25 MY being DSG only, it felt wrong to not get the "last" manual R. So I did.

I traded my MK7.5 GTI for a MK8 380 Edition in October. I too was swayed but the "last manual" and the option packaging for the 380 in Canada checked all my boxes. I was a staunch hater of the new 'no button' dash. But I gotta say, I now absolutely love the haptic steering wheel buttons. Being able to push or swipe for volume and channel/track changes is actually quite nice. They also work decently well with the gloves I typically wear in the winter months (which I take off once the heated wheel warms up). On the latter topic, I have NEVER turned the heated wheel on or off inadvertently like they always harp on in reviews. Literally fake news as far as my experience goes.

The infotainment took some more getting used to, but the configurable widgets and shortcuts, as well as the customizable cluster, make it quite pleasant and efficient once set up to your liking. Most "daily" stuff can be done with the steering wheel or otherwise automated to some degree which limits your interaction with it anyway. Also, the software is way snappier than it was in the early cars and has been nearly glitch free for me. I do very much love my MK8 and know you will too.

Yeah I spent some time yesterday configuring the layout of everything. I'm sure it will be just fine in the long run!
