For street. My gut tells me 8" width would better support the tire and 7.5" would be too floppy. Buuuuut there are a lot more 17x7.5 options. I'm curious what you 17"-ers have experienced.

(235/45r17 is closest to stock size and I'm stock ride height)

Definitely 8". My winter wheels are 7.5" with 205/50R17. No way I would want a 235 on this wheel.

According to the ETRTO the recommended wheel size is 8, it‘s possible to use 7.5-9 also.

I went from 235/45/17 on 8.5" to the same tires on factory 7.5". I could feel the difference the week I switched, but got used to it pretty quickly and now it's fine, and I don't drive gently. No issues with tire wear. I'm just a regular person who drives every day in regular situations, and I scuffed my 8.5" Neuspeeds when parallel parking because the edge of the rim was even with or slightly beyond the sidewall of the tire. I HATED that. I have not scuffed the 7.5" wheels. I'm happy with my choice, so it just depends on your use of the car and your expectations. An 8" wheel is probably ideal, but as you found, there aren't many choices. I originally chose the Neuspeeds because they have a reputation for being durable and reasonably light, had stock hub diameter and took stock bolts. And then they started discontinuing their 17" wheels, including the ones I had...
