The motor is not hard to pull.. I did it alone. If you have tools and know how to turn a wrench anyone could do it. If you don't get an assembled long block, well that's a different story.

Stealership in CA quoted me 5-8k just for the swap. An Independent shop in CA should be around 2-3K

Independent here in MI was around $3k labor including some extras like a new oil pan, injectors, and crank pulley.

A swap to a different motor will be much more. Wiring labor alone can be $5-10k+ at a shop.

Ballsy to do alone, but I agree, it can be done. I’d never pay someone to do a long block replacement for me..saving $~3k and learning the ins n outs of the engine/engine bay is worth it if you plan on keeping the car ~

I almost have my motor out. With the weather, I haven't spent much time on it. Still haven't been able to get my front wheels off.. I lost the lug key. Just need to disconnect the rear axle now and then it should come out.
Can anyone help me find the right lug key?

Another question I have is .. I was reading someone bought a built motor for their R but it was originally in a GTI. He had issues with the swap because of a port that was open on the head or block. If anyone has any info on that please share.

Update:

I’ll be ordering another long block but I’ll be building it myself w/ the help of local machine shop. Tried getting them to assemble it for me but I couldn't justify the cost/risk of sending all the forged items over there ($~2k worth of parts..$450 to ship via FedEx without included taxes/tariffs/etc) and also the likely lack of experience working with forged items and all that. I’d rather put my hands on it than not, and learn along the way.

I’ll be paying $1650 for the new long block shipped to my door. I’ll tear it down once it gets here and get started…forged rods/pistons, ARP head studs, SuperTech valves and valve springs

If anyone has a full list of one-time use bolts (and links/part numbers) that would be super helpful so I can order those now and have them ready ~

I think I’ll make a new thread for the tear down/build too
