That's what I did when I took out the alternator on my daughter's 1.8TSI on the way to taking out the whole accessory bracket to fix a leaking oil seal. Took the alternator out through the top.

Just be very conscious as to how much you are moving the AC line when you've loosened the bracket - last thing you'd want to do is kink that line! Also make sure your coolant line(s) from the header tank and the hard pipe its connected to are all loosened up and well out of the way.

How'd it go? Did you remove the ac bracket?

Didn't, it flexes enough to slide the alternator between it and the intake manifold. I did release the plastic clip near the headlight on the frame though.

The whole process took about 30 minutes with the most time spent sliding the old alternator out carefully, and triple ensuring the belt was realigned properly

Considering that vw diagnostics were wrong I couldn't tell you anything other than generic alternator failing queues, I found out my issue was something completely different: ground loop from an amp.
