He died too close to election for the ballot to be changed. The voters had a choice between voting for that candidate or voting for a member of the green party, this in a deeply blue district. Voting for him meant that there would need to be a special election held for who gets the seat, rather than voting for the green party. There wasn't even a republican on the ballot from what I can tell.
Something similar happened in Nevada in 2018. Except in Nevada when voters elected a dead republican state legislator (Dennis Hof) they just appointed someone else (unelected) to take the seat rather than having a special election to decide on the seat.
