Why do our MKV GTIs sound like Diesels at idle?

Not exactly, It does not go away untill some driving has happened.

Yes, due to high compression, the knock sensors kick in frequently to prevent pre-detonation. Because they work on sound and vibration, the engine has to start making a little detonation noise to make the sensors kick in.

I actually interpreted what you said as the clicking sounds like a flat-4 motor, to which I thought about the beetle type 1 motor since it has a tapping sound from the valves:biggrin:
