The device was there:

That one decision may have saved his life.

IIRC, he didn't have seat belts properly routed either, which contributed.

His wreck flashed into my head as I started to hydroplane into the wall at Daytona when it started raining hard just in turn 4. Poo came out. 125 mph into a wall, no HANS, just a helmet and a brand new GTI. That would have sucked.

Even the car itself tho, newer vehicles transfer less crash force to the occupant.

He also died blocking so his son could win the race so the crash was totally avoidable in the first place. Kind of seems like it was one of those just their time things, Final Destination style.

I don't drive a manual because a DSG is faster in a straight line with an untrained manual driver. I won't even get into track driving where the computer is stupid and shifts at the wrong time costing precious seconds, then obviously a manual is ideal...

You can operate the gas and brakes at the same time with one leg.

I can put my car in M mode and it's the same thing as a manual but still shifts faster.
