How can it be illegal to vent to atmo on a turbo????? They are exhuast gases will go out of the tail pipe any way. The only difference is that it hasn't go through the cat yet. The amount of polution it causes is so small. As far as the US market, blow off all you want. No laws here.

Well, like I said, it's BS, but that's the way it is in Aus... I don't make the laws though!

Also, your mass air flow is before the blow off therefore it doesn't have any affect on the systems fuel trim. I have serveral pages on this it you want.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this?

Also, it has been shown that a 50-50 (return-atmo) diverter valve will increase the life of the turbo.

Very keen to read that - show it to us! :w00t:

Not that turbo life really bothers me... No point keeping a car like this for more than a couple of years... but it's interesting all the same!

Basically, when you lift off the throttle the wastegate closes and the air that was in the down tube is just sitting there. That is when the blow off/deverter valve kicks in. If you have a blow off 100% of that air is vented, meaning turbo lag... you have to force all the air back in the down pipe.
If you have a deverter valve the air is recirculated back into the pipe. Good for performance but the air is heated up again by the ambient temp of the pipe, bad for tubro.
It you have a 50-50 valve (like the one from forge) 50% of the air is vented 50% is recirculated back into the down pipe. The temps of the gas are still hot but not as hot as 100% deverted.
I hope that makes sense but I have up all night and have to get to school. If it does cool, if it doesn't I am sure someone will tell me:wink: .

It made your subi richer because it wasn't seating. When a b/o doesn't work properly it acts as a vacuum leak. A b/o or deverter will have no effect what so ever on fuel trim. I just got the info from the guy who owns the fastest 06 STI in the US. Due to the 02 sensor is after the turbo the 02 has no club if you blew off or deverted. I am guessing that you had the HKS on the subi, the subi runs so hard that if kills even great b/os.

I don't know what to tell you. My buddy drives a 600hp STI (dynocomp) and I have to other friends that have 300+ hp WRX's and the only time they have had A/F issues was when there was a vacuum leak or the bov was bad. Either way, it won't effect a VW.

Do they have front Mount Intercoolers? if so, then it's ok.. But if they're running the stock Top mount or aftermarket top mount, you put it up on the dyno, you will see that every WRX will have unpredicted fluctuations in A/F during mid shifts.. Not a good thing. A couple of great resources did extensive research on the bov's and came up with the conclusion that BOV's dont help. but actually slightly throw the car A/F out.

You are right, I only do this for a living, what do I know?

You may be right when it comes to the VW motors. But i've talked to many Subaru tuners that say otherwise for the 2.0T Boxer Motor.

^I'm with Sauceboy on this one. When I had my WRX with an HKS SSQ BOV the gas mileage went down. I spent so much on buying gas I thought I had a V8:biggrin:
