Many insurance companies consider the vehicle "totaled" if the impact was enough to deploy the airbags and the radiator was punctured (My business is insurance related).

This is not because the vehicle couldn't be brought back to operating condition but because it cost more to reliably repair a vehicle like this than it costs to pay the residual value for it.

Remember that most insurances pay the residual and not the actual market cost unless you have supplemental insurance like new car replacement or such.
