Imported MK7 GTI from Japan - No sound at all

Lurker for awhile while waiting for my Mk7 to arrive from Japan. Arrived yesterday and I realised I have no audio sound at all regardless of source.

I went digging and found a thick yellow/thick black wire in the boot with a molex connector on the end (thick yellow is going to battery in engine bay) and a thin cable with a molex on it, along with 2 RCAs. These run up passenger side to the footwell. Followed them and found the RCAs coming from a AudioTechnica 2ch high/low converter. This seems wired in heading up towards headunit in glovebox.

I'm presuming previous owner had a sound system of some sort and removed it before sale.

I've attached some photos of what I found.

Can anybody explain what's going on as to why I have no sound whatsoever, and how can I rectify this ?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Kind regards
Scott

Scott:Hi.

I agree with your hypothesis that the previous owner of this car installed an non-OEM, aftermarket external amplifier. The OEM equivalent is called "Dnyaudio" and when installed (usually as a factory-build option), the external amplifier gets its audio information via a couple of optic-fiber cables from the MIB (the infotainment brain that lives in the glove box). Again in the OEM set-up, the MIB is coded to NOT use the normal speaker outlets at the rear of the MIB. Instead, in the Dynyaudio set-up, the speakers are wired directly to the OEM amplifier (which lives under the front passenger seat

When non-OEM external amplifiers are used - nearly ALL are not able to get their audio information from the optic-fiber cables (because they don't have a license for VW's proprietry digital protocol - which is called "MOST"). Instead, these non-OEM set-ups thieve a left/right audio signal from a pair of the speaker outlets on the back panel of the MIB. However, the problem with this method is that the internal impedance of the speaker outlets is too low for this purpose. The external amplifier normally needs a high impedance source for the audio signal

On this car, the previous owner solved this problem with the AudioTechnica 2ch high/low converter (without this piece-of-kit, the speaker-based audio would cause clipping and signal-distortion). I suspect that the non-RCA wires will eventually terminate on the back of the MIB - there should be 5 x wires (2 x pairs for the left and right channels and an earth wire).

So, as I said - if the previous owner retrofitted an external amplifier in this car - he/she probably re-routed the OEM speaker wires to terminate on the new amplifier. This would explain why there is no noise from the infotainmement unit.

If this was my car, I would slide-out the MIB from the glove-box and eyeball the state of the speaker terminals on the "Quad-Lock" connector on the rear housing.

Here is a diagram showing how the speakers are connected to the MIB back-panel on a standard MIB (without an external amplifier):

Again, my hunch is that you should find that the speaker wires have been removed from the MIB pins (except for a left/right pairs that connect to the AudioTechnica box)

Hopefully, the original speaker wires will be handy somewhere near the MIB in the cubby space behind the unit.

Please be aware that to slide-out the MIB, you will need a pair of "keys" - see below. The process is real easy and the keys are inexpensive - don't attempt this without using the proper keys.

I'm assuming through-out my response that the "no audio" problem on this car happens for ALL audio sources. Of course, the other problem with using a car that has a Japanese pedigree in Ireland is that the radio bands might need to be re-coded in the MIB.
Don

PS: The excellent video from mr-fix below is not specifically for your problem - but it shows how to remove the MIB and how to release the quad-lock connector at the rear of the unit. Also included in the video is a description of how to release the "N" connector in my diagram above:

Scott:Hi.

Wow that's very much for that in detail response.

They radio keys I had don't work so I ordered a new set to arrive tomorrow. So once I get them I'll pull out the unit in glovebox and see what's going on behind there and report back with photo.

Yes you are correct in saying I've no audio from all sources.

I've nothing under the passenger seat and all that's under drive seat is a TV tuner. So I presume I have most basic sound system from factory?

Would getting a loan of a small amp get my audio back easier ? Is it a case of connect the power/ground to the amp and the RCAs?

If the previous owner removed their sound system, it's possible that you don't have any speakers as well. Have you pulled door panels off to check?

Speakers are all there thankfully. It was 1 of the first things I checked when It clicked with me that there was a sound system in the car previous.

OOPps - my bad -I have to apologize for my incorrect information. I've just checked my VW material and it appears that the OEM external amp is under the driver's seat (I had assumed that it was under the passenger seat on their Right Hand drive cars)..

The OEM amp is called J525 in the VW wiring diagram - see below (it's the TV tuner that is physically under the passenger seat

Given that you have now identified that a module does exist under the driver seat - I suspect that this extra information means that this car may have been built with the OEM external amplifier but without the sub-woffer speaker in the Dynaudio set-up. Maybe the extra wiring was used to add a sub-woofer amplifier in the boot which was removed for sale? Again this is a guess,

So, maybe eyball the connector on the module under the driver-seat - here are the OEM connectors for J525 and RX6:

If the unit under the driver's seat has the larger 30 x pin connector A, then it is the OEM external Amplifier (J525) module. If this is the case, then the factory wiring looms for the speakers will be routed to terminate on the connector A shown in my picture (connector B is for the two fiber-optic cables).

If indeed this car has a J525 module, the loss of sound is more problematic. Do you have access to a diagnostic device like VCDS, or OBDeleven - If so, please post-up a copy of a SCAN report so we can see if there are any errors reported

Thanks again for the in depth reply. I just checked the car there for you.

It's a RHD car so under the driver's seat is a TV Tuner module with the part number 8V0919129B. I have attached a photo of the back of this. Under the passenger seat is absolutely nothing, just smooth carpet. Not even mounting points for anything, or any cables for that matter.

@DV52

Pulled out unit in glovebox and here is what I found. Photo of back of unit attached.

Using the photo of the pinout you posted above here is what I could see.

Pin 1 - black/white - not messed with
Pin 5 - blue/white - not messed with
Pin 2 - red/green - a wire spliced in
Pin 6 - brown/green - a wire spliced in
Pin 3 - red/yellow - a wire spliced in
Pin 7 - brown/yellow a wire spliced in
Pin 4 - blue/black not messed with
Pin 8 - white/black not messed with

I presume it's the high/low converter spliced in.

Any idea what should be next action to take? Would getting a loan of a small amp and hooking it up the power/ground and the RCAs in the boot just solve everything ? If so that's a simple option for me.

OK- I'm surprised!!

I'm not at all convinced that a "loan small amp" will be useful. Think about what your pictures are telling us - the audio signal for the Audio-technica box is supplied by the same wires that supply the left/right front speakers. So, if the front speakers don't work, neither will there be an audio signal for the retrofit equipment!!

As clearly shown in your pictures, the "N" connector on this MIB is fully populated! This means that as factory-built, the speakers in this car have been wired directly onto the Quad-Lock connector. This strongly suggests (to me at least) that the speakers in this car are wired to use the internal amplifier inside the MIB.

So - why no sound? I'm entirely guessing but here are some possible reasons:
  1. The AudioTechnica box/wiring is faulty causing the internal MIB amp to shut-down
  2. The internal amplifier in the MIB is faulty (it does happen)
  3. For some unknown reason the MIB has been coded to by-pass the internal amplifier
Do you have access to a diagnostic device like OBDeleven (or VCDS)? If so, please post-up a copy of a SCAN report for this car - it will tell us much about what's happened to this MIB

I have a friend with VCDS who could possibly give it a scan for me.

Will I get that done first before attempting to remove the AudioTechnica unit + wiring from the car ?

Thanks very much for all the help and knowledge so far. I'll owe you many pints if I can get this rectified.

Got a scan done today by a friend who emailed me the log earlier. Found issues for sure but not sure if its related to audio. He didnt clear anything was just some sort of automatic scan and that was it, so i dont know if these are old and not relevant?

Ok well an update before Don gets back to me.

My friend gave me his laptop and cable and I cleared codes for the engine and HVAC as I thought be no harm.. Started the car as it wasn't running in 2 days, cars running abit and randomly get static from radio station that's on from all speakers , quickly connected Bluetooth and audio was blasting away through every speaker. I didn't touch any wiring!

Turned car off and back on, no audio again. Held power button to reset unit and got audio again. Turned off and back on and now no audio and reset doesn't sort it.

Strange behaviour.

Edit : Couldn't replicate what happened today. Im wondering is the unit faulty?

Scott: Thanks for the SCAN report and for the additional information - yes indeed, very "strange behaviour"!!!

First: as to your question "wondering if the unit is faulty" - I don't think so because a faulty MIB would be reported as such in your SCAN (even if there was an intermittent fault) -and it is not. The reported SCAN errors in the hex5F module relate to peripherals - not the module itself!

My reading of your SCAN is that the MIB on this car is perfectly happy to NOT provide audio - but the reason for this contentment is not immediately apparent (to me, at least) other than it seems to be a situation that has been programmed into the operation of the module, itself (IMO, of course)

Hmm.... I'm struggling to make confident suggestions about this car - but if you are prepared to chase my more fanciful guesses, maybe consider the following:

On your SCAN, the MIB is reported as the module : Address 5F: Information Electr. (J794) and the Component ID is stated as MU-H-N-JP. "JP" means that the Country Code that is factory-set in this module is "Japan" (not surprisingly)

And this is a more readable form of the long-code string on the MIB:
Code:
Byte Hex Binary
00 02 00000010
01 73 01110011
02 00 00000000
03 06 00000110
04 FF 11111111
05 00 00000000
06 00 00000000
07 00 00000000
08 21 00100001
09 33 00110011
10 00 00000000
11 01 00000001
12 00 00000000
13 10 00010000
14 00 00000000
15 00 00000000
16 1F 00011111
17 02 00000010
18 03 00000011
19 36 00110110
20 01 00000001
21 00 00000000
22 01 00000001
23 00 00000000
24 76 01110110

I'm not sure how familiar you are with Hexadecimal and Binary numbers- but Binary numbers are read from right-to-left - so the right-most digit is Bit 0 and the left-most digit is Bit 7

As currently coded and as shown in my list above, your Byte 3 =hex06. This Byte tells the MIB which part of the world-map the SATNAV should use. The value hex06=Japan (again, not surprisingly)

So far - everything seem perfectly OK. However, as shown on your SCAN, the TV tuner reports a violation of Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP). I assume that this fault is stll current. DTCP is a digital rights management technology that restricts applications like televisions by encrypting interconnections between devices.

Now- I have no idea about the digital TV transmission protocols used in Japan and Ireland - but clearly (somehow) the tv module in this car has recognized that it's recieving content which has DTCP certificates that are different to the licenses that have been built into the module. Hence the reported error.

I've not seen the 4096 - Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) error before and I can find no information about it on the web!

However (and I'm guessing here) given this error and my reference above to DTCP "encrypting interconnections between devices" - it's not unreasonable to assume that the audio amplifier in the MIB could be implicated in this fault. Again for emphasis - I'm guessing!!

My hunch is that you managed to get noise from the speakers because in clearing the faults on this car - you also cleared the 4096 error. Howver, some time after using the car- the reception by the tv tuner was such that the same 4096 error was eventually re-registered in the module - hence no noise again!!

So maybe/perhaps you could try disabling the TV tuner (temprarily in the first instance) so that MIB amplifier is isolated from the possible effects of DTCP violation in the tv tuner? There are a number of ways of doing this - but probably unplugging connector E in my RX6 diagram above is the easiest method (this connector carries the battery supply for the tv tuner) . Of course this action will generate a number of errors - but you can deal with these later. It might also be prudent to re-set the MIB as a part of this suggestion

I know it's a guess but I'm more than happy to keep going down this rabbit hole. If we can get it rectified then all this information will surely help another owner somewhere someday. At least today's testing has ruled out the high/low converter and wiring.

I did clear the DTCP code today actually and maybe that's why I got audio until car was switched off and back on. I don't think I rescanned afterwards as laptop battery was going dead.

I'll pull the E plug on the TV tuner tomorrow and report back. Fingers crossed!

Much appreciated again Don.

Well Don, today was uneventful.

Plugged out the power to the TV tuner , cleared all codes and still no audio.

Only related codes I had was TV tuner module not detected and an optical bus error.

Once TV tuner was reconnected the DTCP error came back which I cleared. Still no audio. Reset the MIB by holding the power button and audio randomly came back. Reset the unit a few times audio remained, then out of nowhere it was gone again and I couldn't replicate it even when resetting the DTCP error again.

I went out awhile ago messing about and resetting the unit a few times brought audio back, then it would disappear again with a reset.

I'm at a loss at this stage so this is what I'm considering next. I found a guide (In Russian that Google does well to translate) that converts my JP unit to EU, in the guide everything about their unit matches mine exactly.

Convert Japanese Discover Pro MHIG_JP_VW_S0227 to MHIG_EU_VW_K1550.

I need to use something called More Incredible Bash but it all looks extremely straight forward and suppose nothing really to lose? If the unit wasn't giving me issues I'd of having to do this anyway to get the EU maps. A local guy wants €350 to change it to EU. No chance I'm paying that.

I was looking for a MIB2 unit but that's abit of a minefield with all the diff part numbers etc.

If you think Ive nothing to lose by changing the firmware then let me know and that can be tomorrows task when SDXC card arrives.
