No low level screen wash warning.

Because I decided not to order the Winter Pack, when I bought my GTE, it lacks a warning ‘light’ when my screen wash is getting low. I guess the sensor is in the screen wash container but not connected. Is it possible to make this function available?

I can't answer the question, but this omission in a car that's otherwise packed with driver aids and safety features is incredible.

Agree. Even my Ford Escort XR3 back in 1982 had one.

My 2020 Polo GTI+ doesn’t have a low washer fluid warning lamp either. I do top up the washer fluid when doing my usual regular under-bonnet oil and coolant checks, especially if I know I’ve been using the windscreen washers a fair bit since the last top up.

Snap! I also had an XR3. 1981 X plate. Red with a rear spoiler big enough to have a picnic on. Bit of a looker in it’s day. Can’t remember whether it had a low screen washer fluid light or not.

Can‘t help feeling that VW were a bit petty not to fit this feature.

I was a bit of a 1980’s fast Ford fan back in the day.

You post has just sent me on a nostalgia trip and prompted me to dig out some photos. Here’s my 1982 Y reg Sunburst Red XR3. 14” alloys at the time seemed really large but they look tiny now. Apologies to other forum members for going off topic.

And here’s my 1984 B reg and 1986 D reg XR3i‘s too;

Sadly mine was an early XR3 without the coveted ‘i’ or 5 speed gearbox. Regardless, red ones were always faster 🙄.

Not sure why anyone is surprised by the penny pinching. It is getting worse as time goes on.

Having said that, the screen wash warning light has been part of the winter pac for a long time iirc, which I think also gives a larger washer bottle.

Yes, as far back as the Mk5 there was only a low level warning if winter pack was factory ordered, winter pack also included heated seats if cloth seats fitted /heated washer jets/ headlight washers and a bigger washer fluid reservoir, the bigger reservoir was purely due to the headlight washers using extra fluid, I retrofitted the full winter pack to my MK6 GTI, so it can be done, the mk8 however doesn’t need a bigger reservoir as there are no headlight washers.

I have a Style package and of course there is heated seats, but if the washer sensor is not in the life package, or you needed a winter package, then this is very strange, the price of the sensor is very low.

Wait, the Golf 8 doesn't have headlight washers? Not even the top spec/hot ones?
No. In the UK headlamp washers aren’t a legal requirement if the light output is less than 2,000 lumens, which must be the case with the LED units fitted to the Golf 8. It’s unlikely VW would fit them if there’s no legal requirement to do so. Also, with significant focus on CO2 emissions these days, no headlamp washers = no need to fit a larger (and heavier when full) washer fluid reservoir, which helps reduce emissions levels - probably only by a negligible amount, but every little helps.

IMHO no headlamp washers is no bad thing; on VW’s I’ve owned that had headlamp washers, they didn’t seem particularly effective at keeping the headlamp lenses clean, and I used to get through copious amounts of washer fluid - most of which seemed to end up washing the car bonnet / hood.

Well we have a VAG car (not a Golf just yet, still waiting - but a MY19 Seat Ateca) - with normal LED headlights, and we do have headlight washers. They're reasonably effective - not to the point where i could not live without, but they certainly do the trick. I'm genuinely surprised by that. I don't think that weight savings play a role there, there's so much stuff where you could save (more) weight before you'd think of reducing liquid, but cost saving is probably spot on.

I don't think those 3-4kg in weight savings play a big role in emission levels especially on the GTE. I gain that (and more, sigh) over christmas alone.

Genuinely surprised, since we have it on a Seat, we kind of expected it to be on the Golf (at least the top end ones) too. The Tiguan (where saving weight would make more sense) has them too, so i'm pretty sure it's simply "cheaping out". Ah well. Obviously not a deal breaker, just surprised.

If the light output are below 2000lumens, they dont need headlight washers.
EU law or something. So they limit the light power and save costs
