Renault Megane RS 250 Cup

Curious to know your thoughts, whether a a GTi with stage 1, full TBE, CAI and some handling improvement mods would be able to compete against the Renault on the track. What sort of mods apart from the tune would you be looking at? The idea is to still undercut the price of the Renault. Here in Malaysia, a VW GTi from the dealership goes for MYR212,000 (app. USD68,000) versus a Renault at MYR230,000 (app. USD74,500). Is that car available in the US at all? Your impressions? Thanks in advance for sharing. :)

You can't get Renaults in the US. Maybe the Europe folks can chime in.

Performance wise, the megane is more in the league of the Focus RS and golf R, not the GTI. A stage 1 GTI could probably compete better but I'm not 100%. It looks ridiculous if you ask me and is a pure ricer car, very much like the Focus RS, which also looks like it has had a cheap body kit just bolted on to the regular euro focus.

There is a nice comparison here:

Actually I'll take that back - the 250 looks pretty nice, but the focus still looks stupid!

That is nothing. In neighboring Singapore the GTI cost USD$150,000.

So is having a GTI luxurious or is it like having one here? here you can buy a new R8 for that much if im not mistaken

Any European car is considered luxury in Singapore. The base price is about the same, the additional cost is in tax (170% of car value) and bidding for the right to buy a car (currently $55k).

Yes that is the SGD price. Converted to USD it is 150k.

Yes that is correct. And after spending all that money, the highway speed limit is ~50 mph, and most roads are ~30 mph; add the traffic, and there is essentially no road worth driving a GTI on.
