Ernest Rutherford and the gold foil experiment. Changed chemistry and the entirety of science as a whole forever. It drove him mad when he found out about the nucleus of an atom. On top of that, he had about 9 people under him, (students) that won the Nobel prize. A brilliant man by anyone's standard.
