Damn! In my country this was already implemented. You can't order a new Golf (any golf) with manual transmission anymore.

Looking at various countries dealer websites, it's looking like diesel ICEs and manual transmissions days are numbered anyway :(

IMHO it doesn’t come as a big surprise.
  • Diesel has become increasingly demonised in recent years, even though modern diesels are pretty clean.
  • The ‘official’ CO2 emissions figures for many of VW’s DSG models are either no worse or they’re better than the equivalent manual model. Even if the emissions of the DSG version are only marginally better than the manual version, the reduction in emissions-based fines levied on a vehicle manufacturer could be significant when considering that manufacturer‘s total annual new vehicle sales.
  • With most - if not all - car manufacturers, if a specific model of car comes with the choice of either manual or auto / DSG transmission, the list price of the auto / DSG version will be higher, so more profit per vehicle built / sold for the car manufacture.
  • Removing the choice of cars with manual transmission is readying us for auto-only EV’s.
Edit; link to Autocar article on no manual gearbox option for the mk8.5 Golf has just been posted over on the Golf R forum. Link to the article below;
