I don't understand the fascination with radar detectors. Basically you are saying you want to break the law but just not get caught. Do you go around murdering people as long as no one sees you do it? No.

Well, to me it's more like, I don't want to get pinched for driving 60 in a 50, no traffic. I consider that money-grubbing by the local PD.

Also current legislation hasn't kept up with the technology. Newer cars are capable of maintaining much higher speeds than most speed limits allow and more often than not, the "crime" that's caught is usually a lesser offense than officers should be concerned with. And besides, laws aren't always infallible, especially with the caliber of individuals we entrust to enforce them.

Remember that radar/laser detectors do nothing unless there is a signal to receive, whether laser or radar. I've been running a radar detector since 1981 - had all the good ones - Fuzzbuster, Escort, Passport and Valentine 1. Has it saved my a$$? Many times, though less and less as the years have gone by. Gone are the days when cops set up stationary radar blasting out K band that you detect 2 miles away. They are getting stealthier. But here in Maryland, I go through radar or laser EVERY DAY! Fortunately, they are usually in the same spots.

Instant-on radar is a killer. If you are the lead car and you are driving above the speed limit, you are going to be the sacrificial lamb for the cars behind you. You can't react fast enough. As a matter of fact, I have seen where people who are slightly exceeding the speed limit without detectors who don't slam on brakes when hit by the radar are less likely to get pulled over than those that do.

And a Laser detector-user's flow diagram work like this:

You are driving on the highway.
Your laser detector goes off.
You hit the brakes and look at your speed.
If current speed is in excess of the speed limit, you're getting a ticket.

Basically, a laser detector is a device that lets you know if you are about to get pulled over or not.

And yet; it is still the same thing...

I speed; I don't bother with a radar/laser detector. I don't speed like crazy, and I don't even bother slowing down if I see a cop. If you see a cop he has probably already gauged your speed and decided if he is coming after you; hitting your brakes at that point is basically just an admission of guilt...

I've had several LEO friends who tell me they generally don't even bother with a traffic stop unless you are doing something stupid or are at least 10-12 mph over the limit. I generally set cruise at 7-9 over and "what will be will be"

Got pulled over by a Md State Trooper. Mid-afternoon old-folks traffic was doing about 35 mph in a 45 mph zone, and I was doing 45 mph threading my way through it. I checked my rear view mirror and here comes this black Charger flying - and I mean FLYING - up on my rear end. I immediately signaled to get out of his way, pulled over and he lit it up and pulled in behind me. I played dumb, because I wasn't doing anything wrong. He was really pissed off at me. Apparently, he has been trying to sneak up behind me to pace me and couldn't catch me in the interspersed traffic. He never got the chance to be behind me long enough to track my speed because as soon as he got behind me, I saw him and pulled over. He said I was speeding. I asked him how fast I was going. He didn't have an answer, but repeated that I was speeding. I told him I was doing a maximum of 45 in a 45 and there was no way that traffic would allow any faster speed than that. He told me I was changing lanes recklessly without signalling. I told him that I signaled at ALL my lane changes after checking mirrors and blind spots and allowing for sufficient clearance. He accused me of reckless driving, and I said for what? I told him that accelerating from 35 to the speed limit to avoid people making left and right hand turns was not illegal. So he wrote me a warning because he knew he has nothing that would stand up in court. But boy was he pissed for being outdriven by a hatchback in his Interceptor Charger.

speeding = murder :lol:

Laws against speeding are retarded, laws against murder are not. That's the difference.

All correct^^^ confirmed by several family LEO. Another good tip I've seen posted before and also given by family is turn on your interior lights at night!! Put the officer at ease and make one stop slightly easier for the night. This might also win you some slight favor with them. :iono:

I know. It was bound to happen, coming from a vehicle that couldn't get to 85 in under 30 seconds and when you did you would know exactly how "fast" that was for it.:yikes::lol:

Either way, why are you in such a hurry that you must go 60 in a 50, then bitch about the law being lame when you knew about it ahead of time?

Also current legislation hasn't kept up with the technology. Newer cars are capable of maintaining much higher speeds than most speed limits allow and more often than not, the "crime" that's caught is usually a lesser offense than officers should be concerned with. While I agree with you, it does not give anyone the right to break a law. I did a MASSIVE report on speed laws in college, basically calling the laws speed taxes. Believe me, I know the data that is out there and I most certainly agree that most speed laws are set too low and there has been more than enough cases of where too slow a speed limit INCREASES traffic accidents on a road that previously held a higher limit.

There will always be the sensational fatal accidents from people going WAY too fast, but that is not the majority. Everyone mostly wishes the limits were 5-10 mph higher, and those that go 5-10 under the limit are the hazard, not the ones above.

But, law is law and whether we agree with it we must abide by it or face the consequences.

The point is that is is still a law, no matter how retarded it is.
