Also im trying not to drink alcohol until May and you're not helping!! haha.

My suggestion for everyone here would be to look at your histogram after you've taken your photos. The picture may look good on your lcd display, but you shouldn't go by it. Histograms tell you everything about your photo.

so i figured out how to display the histogram.
i still have no idea how to use it to my advantage. it's gibberish to me.

here's one of my personal favs that i've taken

Camera: Canon XSi/450D
Lens: Canon EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
F-stop: f/5.6
Exposure time: 1/250
ISO speed: ISO - 400
Exposure bias: 0
Focal length: 47mm

im pretty sure it's slightly over-exposed in some areas, but i may be wrong

turn highlight alert on and you should see the sky blinking, maybe even parts of the car. those would be overexposed areas. you could play with hdr here so the sky is exposed properly as well as the car.

I made a thread on another forum asking about what my next step should be. Just gonna copy/paste it:

So I've had my DSLR for a little over a year, only used it off and on for the first few months. These past 6-8 months or so, I've been trying to practice a bit more. Nothing special, just a Canon T3(as entry level as it gets), with a 50 mm 1.8. I rarely ever use the kit lens, unless I'm shooting indoors, or for something at school. Everything else, I use the 50.

Really looking to take the next step and embrace this hobby more. Planning on taking a photography class at my university next quarter before I graduate just to learn a bit more. I really want a focal lens next. Kinda leaning towards a Tamron 28-75 or a Sigma 8-16, probably the Tamron.

Oh, and I just got Lightroom, so I'm gonna start messing with that a little bit as well. Any critique is welcome!

Any tips/pointers? A couple of buddies are gonna let me shoot their cars in the next couple of weeks, so I'm excited for my first amateur 'shoot'.

That picture would be much better if you hadn't cut off the top -- I'm not sure if you noticed that while looking through the viewfinder. I've made that mistake myself a number of times and kicked myself for it. I now force myself to examine the entire scene as seen through the viewfinder rather than looking at the focus point.

Was that the widest focal length that your lens has available?

Here are a couple I had from my walk a couple of days ago.

I feel like this one isn't in focus completely.

Those are pretty nice you toggaf, my only gripe would be how you cut off some pictures of the cars like image 1660 and 1267. Like find a better way of composing them. But other than that, the colors look good, comp for the other pics are fine, well exposed. Nice.

Would've been a great picture if you didnt cut off the top of the building. Always make sure you have your full subject in frame.

Not bad, but they're pretty "eh"...find a way to make them more interesting. Like the flower photo, i'd like to see the detail in the flower. Get closer, try shooting from under the flower looking upwards to the branch. Get some of those details.

The swan is nice too, but i think it would've been a lot better if you got down a bit lower and well if possible to get closer. But color wise, they look good.
