I didn't really notice it in my mk6 until I did the stage1 tune. Now it is pretty loud if I am full boost and shift, even on stock exhaust.
As someone said, the specific sound is unique to the DSG, but the overall effect/sound is unique to dual clutch cars I think. I have heard BMW's make it as well, just a slightly different sound.
