Golf 8 - Wireless Charging behaviour

Fantastic point. I think you've identified the source of the problem. The NFC/Apple Pay thing makes total sense.

Are you suggesting, that completing the set up of smartphone to assign Mobile Keys (the 8 steps you list) will remove the problem and simply allow the phone to charge?

Even though our Golf8 has the mobile key option ticked, we never bothered to set it up.
Not sure going through the steps will allow your phone to charge, I take there is not an option in the infotainment to switch off mobile key.

The only thing I wonder but don’t know is if you go through the steps and it tells you that your phone is not compatible it will allow you to turn off the NFC in your wireless charging mat.

VW should have provided a way to turn off the NFC for phone that are not compatible, but that is maybe wishing for too much for.

The cover is fitted on the Golf 8 Gti/Gtd/Gte and R as standard.
Just for the record, and to avoid any confusion by NAR (North American Region) owners who might be reading this discussion, the phone cover is not provided on any MK 8 Golfs sold in the USA or Canada. All our cars look like the picture shown in post #56.

My 2024 Golf GTI (top trim level), built in October 2023, is fitted with the wireless charging pad without the antenna booster function (Production code: 9ZV). I suspect that this is the same for all NAR vehicles with the wireless charging function.

I have found the new wireless fast charger pad (15W) which is installed on the new Passat. It looks similar in size and uses a 6 pin connecter similar to that of the Golf 8. Anyone trying a retrofit?🤔🤞💪
The part number is 3P0035502.
I imagine this will be installed in the new Golf 8 FL.

Nice find, nice idea. Any idea on cost?

this looks a good solution - I have found one on Polish ebay but before I take the plunge can I check does the A in the part number not make any difference - I have a 21 plate so guessing I have the

5NA980611 fitted and not the 5NA980611A which comes in 2023 models

There are 3 different wireless pads installed on the Golf 8 dipending on what extras are installed:

This wireless charging pad is installed from factory as standard:
Part Number: 5NA980611A
- 2F0- Without locking and starting systems
- 9ZV - Comfort telephony without external antenna connection

If you added the optional extra "Mobile phone Interface ‘Comfort’ with Inductive Smartphone Charging."
then this wireless charging pad is installed:
Part Number: 5NA980611
- 2F0- Without locking and starting systems
- 9IJ - Comfort telephony with LTE and wireless charging

If you have the optional extra "Mobile Key" then this wireless charging pad is installed:
Part Number: 3G0980611
- 2F1- With locking and starting systems
- 9IJ - Comfort telephony with LTE and wireless charging

In regards to the Wireless charging pad for the new Golf 8.5 the part number is:
3P0035502A
- GP1 - Vehicles with special upgrade measures
- 9ZQ - Comfort telephony with wireless charging (fast charge) without external antenna connection

According to the schematics and photos the connector uses a 6 pin brown plug (T6v) while on the Golf 8 it uses a 6 pin Black Plug (T6a). There are differences with the cabling too.

you are very helpful Massimo (and a night owl too) - thank you! - that is a cooling fan on the rear of the assembly I guess. 400 Euros is a lot though with some wiring to tackle. My car has keyless locking and starting system Keyless Access so I am guessing I need the GP1 variant. I have seen some used ones - they have yellow stickers like in your photo but different numbers there is an 08 S and also a 05 S...

I confess to being a serial modder and put in the piano black trim on your recommendation. Currently putting alcantara door, dash and wheel covers on as my last hurrah

So to diversify the Golf 8.5 from the Golf 8 they have added the following PR_Code:
GP0 for the Golf Mk8
GP1 for the Golf Mk8.5 or FaceLift (FL) or Restyling.
I have seen on eBay second hand wireless pads for around 100 to 150€.
Yes the 3P0035502 series come with a cooling fan and have a faster wireless charging than those from the Golf 8.
Just to be sure I would need to see the wiring of the Wireless Pad plug from a Golf 8.5.

@Massimo 2323 has provided useful and interesting information about variations in the different types of wireless charging pads that are produced by VW, but I would not want to be the first person to attempt to install a different charging pad in my (North American) Golf.

The charging pad is not a stand-alone device, in the sense that you just provide 12 volt power to it and it does different things depending on what part number you have installed. It's connected into LIN and CAN busses in the car, and it interacts with other controllers such as the access & start controller and the telephony controller. I suspect, based on past experience with other controllers, that some dataset coding might be required in order to get a different part number charging pad to work as intended without interfering or breaking the functionality of other controllers that it interacts with.

It will be interesting to sit back and watch and see what results others get if they change the charging pad in their car.

I guess someone also needs to sit in a mk8.5 or the new passat and test if their latest generation e.g. iphone 14 works in the charging tray...

Hey! I'm currently looking to do Alcantara for my interior dash, doors, etc. I haven't done this before! Any recommendations, or links you could help a brotha with?! :)
