it's a 3.0 L, not 3.5. with a chip and exhaust, you're at close to 400hp, and probably over 400 ft-lbs.

I agree with ABTSportsline here. The E46 M3 was a NA 3.3 L engine with 333hp. This engine is only slightly smaller, but with TWO turbos and putting out LESS hp. From the factory it should already have at least 400hp, no modifying necessary regardless of if you care about warranty.

I realize this wasn't invited to the party but I while I was getting an oil change today I strolled down to a dealership specializing in premium cars. They had 3-4 5-series Bimmers. One of which was a silver '05 545I for $38K.

I'm afraid I'd have to go with that. It was HOT.

hmmm something must be wrong with that BMW if it's at 38K, if not it's a steal of a price and would rule out everything else

I test drove a new MSC before I bought the GTi. The new MSC had waaay too much torque steer and i was not digging the way the engine felt. Seemed like the computer wanted to be in balls-out mode or im a pussy mode all the time. Sometimes I would go to floor it and it would be in economy mode, it would sort of lag for a second and then shoot away. Very not fun to drive. the supercharged MSC was fabulous. I loved driving that. But in the end the GTi won the battle

also the MINi has really wierd ergonomics. many things placed out of place just to be different.

also the e46 M3 is a 3.2 liter - not 3.3. Just fyi.

according to a recent article the turbos in the 335i are all about low end torque and do very little above 3000 rpm. yes you can chip it and get much more HP, but there are already stories out about dealers voiding engine warranty work due to chipping.

the 335 has 300hp @ 5800 rpm AND 300 ft-lbs from 1400-5000 rpm

the new m3 has 414 hp and 295 ft-lbs

e46 m3 is 333hp @ 7900 rpm, but has 262 ft-lbs @ 4900 rpm

it depends on why you buy the cars. strictly from an engine performance, the m3 is much better suited for track because of it's high rev limiter and nice upper powerband. the 335 puts down a lot of torque pretty early, which is nice around town. with regards to hp, they're designed differently...the m3 is designed for high hp @ high rpm. btw, no way in their right mind would bmw make 400hp from the factory on a 335, since the new m3 is rated at 414hp.

will be interesting to see what Dinan does with the 335i chip - they are usually very conservative. Since they are "in" with BMW I would think BMW will not let them come close to the new M3 hp.
