Fender subwoofer mods

So, I used jb weld plastic weld to fill all the holes and it made a difference. Also used rubber foam strips to seal The spacer to the box better. It does appear there is only about an 1/8th” of space between the sub and the floor. I was looking at some other options to remove the spacer, but it sounds good atm. I’m Still waiting for the subwoofer I ordered, but they are on eBay if anyone wants to try. It may require some trimming of the reinforcement rib right beneath the sub

Right on. Do you reckon you have it completely sealed now? How much space do think there is between the magnet and bottom of the box while using the spacer? I really hope I can machine the spacer down a bit thinner for more clearance between the sub and false floor. I have a spare tire so Im assuming it brings the entire thing up a bit closer to the false floor.

it sounds way better after using the epoxy on the holes and adding foam rubber to the spacer. The sub may be hitting the false floor, I do not have the spare tire, but I cant tell. I need to do some testing with chalk when I get home from AT. I'll also have the Memphis speaker to try soon. I may steal my friends box from his r to test it out.

I'm a loudspeaker engineer, and bought the cheapest Alltrack since I did NOT like the sound of the Fender setup at all, so this thread grabbed my attention.
- The frequency setting is surely the crossover, probably just lowpass for sub but without more screens hard to tell
- Stuffing a sealed enclosure changes the heat exchange from adiabatic to isothermal (or something like that and maybe vice-versa, I haven't messed with that in a looooooooong time). It also absorbs upper frequencies coming off the back of the cone, keeping them from re-radiating out through the enclosure-even with a crossover, some higher frequencies still come out of the sub.
- Some poly fills are not very effective. Acousta-Stuf https://www.parts-express.com/acous...eaker-cabinet-sound-damping-material--260-317 can be better, as can unfaced fiberglass (but wear gloves, eh?). Experiment 1-1.5 pounds per cubic foot of enclosure volume. Don't let it touch near the cone.
- If the enclosure is thin, anti-vibration coating or even auto under coat can also help reduce vibration.
- But bass-ically (ha ha) I thought the subwoofer and the entire system sounded like DSP-processed crap, so much that now I have to insert an old-school key into the dash every day since I bought the S.

Sooooo. The Memphis sub pounds! Needed a 1/2 inch spacer, but I also modified the cover to mount over the new sub, and it works perfect. I used about 4-5oz of poly fil (I don’t have a scale so I used my calibrated arm).

Nice work! So which of the two subs do you think is a better fit?

the Memphis has a larger magnet, and wont sit in the existing hole without modification. I went a different route with both. The Kicker I modified the mount ring to contour to the box. The Memphis, I modified the box (I used a Dremel to cut out material). Both boxes I used plastic epoxy to fill any holes and gaps that where visible, or perceived. I also used 1/4 foam rubber (Artic King Brand) from Home Depot to add to the inside gap of the spacer. I did two layers inside the ring, with the first layer being partitioned to fill the space between the plastic reinforcements inside. One difference between the two is that the spacer needed to be trimmed on the inside due to the speaker flaring. I cut about a 1/4 down at about 30 degree angle on the inside top lip.
I did find sheets of polycarbonate on amazon that would work for the kicker in this way: Remove the raised sections that surround the existing hole, scruff up the area with sandpaper. and glue the sheet, cut to size with a hole, in that area. I feel the Kicker setup is best, especially if you want least amount of work. The Memphis was more work, especially with cutting, but it does have a grill available, or you can modify the stock one like i posted previously.

Glad I found this thread. Spent $XXX adding a sub in my MK6..did not want to go through that route again.

So. As I add up my Amazon cart. This is what I have.

I used those spacers. They do need some modification to work.

AxMan, you have a preference over the two subs? Curious if going with the Memphis is l worth the slightly extra work?

It would be nice to have the upgraded sub option if someone decided to get the compact tire spare. I appreciate your work on this .

The Memphis is really good. The kicker may not hit as hard, but I do need to put some more poly fil in that one and test it out. The Memphis one does allow the use of the cover, like I posted earlier. The kicker would need something custom, or a kicker grill. I put some padding on the cover plate for the Memphis so there is no Hard plastic rubbing of the trunk floor and speaker cover.

I do also recommend some single sided adhesive backed foam. Approx 1/16 in thick to put on the spacer and the speaker mounting surfaces. The Memphis does come with a rubber surround, which can be used, but will require some other modifications for the cover to fit, unless you get the Mesh grill that goes with it.

You could get some at Michelle’s or Jo Ann’s fabrics likely as well.
